Image motion environments: background noise for movement-based animal signals.

Understanding the evolution of animal signals has to include consideration of the structure of signal and noise, and the sensory mechanisms that detect the signals. Considerable progress has been made in understanding sounds and colour signals, however, the degree to which movement-based signals are constrained by the particular patterns of environmental image motion is poorly understood. Here we have quantified the image motion generated by wind-blown plants at 12 sites in the coastal habitat of the Australian lizard Amphibolurus muricatus. Sampling across different plant communities and meteorological conditions revealed distinct image motion environments. At all locations, image motion became more directional and apparent speed increased as wind speeds increased. The magnitude of these changes and the spatial distribution of image motion, however, varied between locations probably as a function of plant structure and the topographic location. In addition, we show that the background motion noise depends strongly on the particular depth-structure of the environment and argue that such micro-habitat differences suggest specific strategies to preserve signal efficacy. Movement-based signals and motion processing mechanisms, therefore, may reveal the same type of habitat specific structural variation that we see for signals from other modalities.

Objectives: Pancreatic diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has numerous clinical applications, but conventional single-shot methods suffer from off resonance-induced artifacts like distortion and blurring while cardiovascular motion-induced phase inconsistency leads to quantitative errors and signal loss, limiting its utility. Multishot DWI (msDWI) offers reduced image distortion and blurring relative to single-shot methods but increases sensitivity to motion artifacts. Motion-compensated diffusion-encoding gradients (MCGs) reduce motion artifacts and could improve motion robustness of msDWI but come with the cost of extended echo time, further reducing signal.

Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) is approved for patients with symptomatic severe mitral regurgitation (MR) who are deemed inoperable or at high surgical risk with life expectancy of more than 1 year, but has also been used off-label in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) for symptomatic relief who are not candidates for septal reduction therapy. An 83-year-old woman with decompensated heart failure was found to have HOCM with systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve and a large P2 flail segment with ruptured cords. TEER was performed resulting in mild MR and resolution of the prior left ventricular outflow tract gradient.

Our case report characterizes a rare presentation of mid-ventricular Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) in a patient with suspected myocarditis as an underlying cause. Mid-ventricular TTC is a rare variant of TTC presenting with overlapping symptoms and physical exam findings of acute coronary syndrome, which often leads to misdiagnosis as myocardial infarction. Our case is of a 77-year-old female patient with a history of hyperlipidemia, right breast ductal carcinoma in situ, and diverticular disease who presented to the emergency department for evaluation of chest pain radiating to the jaw with associated nausea and vomiting.

Purpose This study aimed to clarify which positions are beneficial for patients with pathological lung diseases, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, by obtaining lung ventilation and deformable vector field (DVF) images using Deformable Image Registration (DIR). Methods Thirteen healthy volunteers (5 female, 8 male) provided informed consent to participate to observe changes in normal lungs. DIR imaging was processed using the B-spline algorithm to obtain BH-CTVI (inhale, exhale) in four body positions (supine, prone, right lateral, left lateral) using DIR-based breath-hold CT ventilation imaging (BH-CTVI).
