Paediatric age-dependent serum transferrin isoform distribution studied by HPLC.

Published: March 2008

Background: Human serum transferrin shows different transferrin isoforms with e.g. a varying amount of glycosylation, resulting in asialo-, mono-, di-, up to octasialotransferrin. We wanted to examine whether there are age-dependent differences in this transferrin isoform distribution.

Methods: Serum samples from a total of 126 paediatric patients (mean/median/minimum/maximum: 6.8/6.0/0.5/14 years) grouped in seven age groups (<2 years, 3-4 years, up to 13-14 years) were analyzed on an HPLC (Recipe Chemicals & Instruments GmbH, Munich, Germany). Means, medians and percentiles were computed for each transferrin isoform and tested for statistically significant differences between the age groups.

Results: CDT corresponded to disialotransferrin (since asialo- and monosialotransferrins were not detectable) and did not show statistically significant differences between the 7 age groups. The latter is also true for trisialo- and tetrasialotransferrin whereas pentasialotransferrin shows a statistically significant decrease with age.

Conclusions: We suggest that age-independent decision limits, e.g. the 95% percentiles for disialotransferrin (1.1%) and trisialotransferrin (5.3%), can be used for the differentiation between normal and increased fractions of these isoforms until paediatric reference ranges have been established. The presence of asialo- and monosialotransferrin in paediatric serum should be considered as abnormal.

Introduction: Obesity is a potential risk factor for anemia in children. This systematic review (SR) was undertaken to estimate the association of obesity with iron deficiency (ID) and ID anemia (IDA), in children.

Methods: A systematic literature search for observational studies was done in PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and the Cochrane library, with additional hand-searching.

Objectives: To assess the prognostic value of the preoperative serum ferritin-to-transferrin ratio (FTR) in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Methods:We retrospectively reviewed data from 226 patients who underwent surgery for non-metastatic RCC at our institution between January 1, 2012, and June 30, 2021. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (timeROC) analysis identified the optimal FTR cut-off, dividing patients into high and low FTR groups.

Background: Iron deficiency (ID) is currently defined as a serum ferritin level <100 or 100 to 299 ng/mL with transferrin saturation (TSAT) <20%. Serum ferritin and TSAT are currently used to define absolute and functional ID. However, individual markers of iron metabolism may be more informative than current arbitrary definitions of ID.

Menopause is a natural biological aging process characterized by the loss of ovarian follicular function and decrease estrogen levels. These hormonal fluctuations are associated with increased iron levels, which ultimately lead to iron accumulation. This study aims to investigate the effects of Deferasirox on iron homeostasis and hematopoiesis in ovariectomized rats with iron accumulation.

This research explored the effect of high-fiber diet based on gut microbiota on chronic heart failure (HF) patients. Chronic HF patients, who had undergone a dietary survey indicating a daily dietary fiber intake of less than 15g/d were divided into the control and study groups (n = 50). In addition to conventional heart failure treatment, the study group received dietary guidance, while the control group did not receive any dietary guidance and maintained their usual low-fiber dietary habits.
