Background/aims: NAFLD with pathological features resembles alcohol-induced liver injury but its pathogenesis remained unclear. IL-6 and IL-8 belonged to pro-inflammatory cytokines and previous studies in alcoholic liver disease showed plasma levels of IL-6 and IL-8 correlated with disease severity. There has been no report regarding plasma levels of IL-6 and Il-8 in Chinese patients with NAFLD.
Methodology: A total of 94 NAFLD patients and 50 age and sex-matched control subjects were enrolled to compare the clinical characteristics and plasma levels of IL-6/IL-8. IL-6 and IL-8 were determined by commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (R&D systems, USA).
Results: As compared with control group, NAFLD patients had significantly higher BMI (p<0.001), fasting sugar (p=0.002), cholesterol (p=0.017), and triglyceride (p<0.001) level. NAFLD patients with abnormal ALT had the highest plasma levels of IL-6 but it did not reach the statistical differences as compared with other groups. Plasma IL-8 measurement showed NAFLD patients with abnormal serum ALT had the highest level (42.87+/-16.58 pg/mL), followed by NAFLD with normal ALT (13.53+/-2.32 pg/mL) and control groups (9.19+/-1.75 pg/mL, p=0.028 as compared with NAFLD with abnormal ALT).
Conclusions: Through the chemotactic and proinflammatory effects, IL-8 may play a role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD in Chinese patients.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the potential ameliorating murine reproductive effects of herbal tea extracts against bisphenol A-induced (BPA) cytotoxicity. A comparative study was applied among red, green and blue teas in mice groups. Samples were coded as RTE, GTE and BTE groups, respectively.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) represents a progressive degenerative disorder characterized by the gradual erosion of articular cartilage. This study aimed to develop and validate biomarker-based predictive models for KOA diagnosis using machine learning techniques. Clinical data from 2594 samples were obtained and stratified into training and validation datasets in a 7:3 ratio.

Oxidative stress (OS) is crucial in schizophrenia (SCZ) pathology. Ferroptosis, a recently discovered cell death pathway linked to OS, might contribute to the development of SCZ. This study investigated the association between ferroptosis markers and cognitive impairments in chronic SCZ patients.

Whether the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K are associated with development of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) after allogeneic stem cell transplantation, is unclear. We assessed if the levels of these vitamins were associated with development of GvHD during the first year after transplantation using data from a two-armed randomized nutritional intervention trial. Changes in plasma levels during 1-year follow-up were analyzed using a linear mixed model for repeated measurements.

Mitochondrial 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA synthase 2 (HMGCS2) deficiency is a rare, potentially life-threatening autosomal recessive disorder resulting from mutations in the HMGCS2 gene, leading to impaired ketogenesis. We systematically reviewed the clinical presentations, biochemical and genetic abnormalities in 93 reported cases and 2 new patients diagnosed based on biochemical findings. Reported onset ages ranged from 3 months to 6 years, mostly before the age of 3.
