In this paper we give a new fast iterative algorithm for support vector machine (SVM) classifier design. The basic problem treated is one that does not allow classification violations. The problem is converted to a problem of computing the nearest point between two convex polytopes. The suitability of two classical nearest point algorithms, due to Gilbert, and Mitchell et al., is studied. Ideas from both these algorithms are combined and modified to derive our fast algorithm. For problems which require classification violations to be allowed, the violations are quadratically penalized and an idea due to Cortes and Vapnik and Friess is used to convert it to a problem in which there are no classification violations. Comparative computational evaluation of our algorithm against powerful SVM methods such as Platt's sequential minimal optimization shows that our algorithm is very competitive.

We propose a temperature-dependent optimization procedure for the second-nearest neighbor (2NN) * tight-binding (TB) theory parameters to calculate the effects of strain, structure dimensions, and alloy composition on the band structure of heterostructure spherical core/shell quantum dots (QDs). We integrate the thermoelastic theory of solids with the 2NN * TB theory to calculate the strain, core and shell dimensions, and composition effects on the band structure of binary/ternary CdSe/Cd(Zn)S and ZnSe/Zn(Cd)S QDs at any temperature. We show that the 2NN * TB theory with optimized parameters greatly improves the prediction of the energy dispersion curve at and in the vicinity of L and X symmetry points.

In grid intelligent inspection systems, automatic registration of infrared and visible light images in power scenes is a crucial research technology. Since there are obvious differences in key attributes between visible and infrared images, direct alignment is often difficult to achieve the expected results. To overcome the high difficulty of aligning infrared and visible light images, an image alignment method is proposed in this paper.

In May 2021, the M/V ship fire disaster led to the largest maritime spill of resin pellets (nurdles) and burnt plastic (pyroplastic). Field samples collected from beaches in Sri Lanka nearest to the ship comprised nurdles and pieces of pyroplastic. Three years later, the toxicity of the spilled material remains unresolved.

Infrared absorption spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy were integrated into three data fusion strategies-hybrid (concatenated spectra), mid-level (extracted features from both datasets) and high-level (fusion of predictions from both models)-to enhance the predictive accuracy for xylazine detection in illicit opioid samples. Three chemometric approaches-random forest, support vector machine, and -nearest neighbor algorithms-were employed and optimized using a 5-fold cross-validation grid search for all fusion strategies. Validation results identified the random forest classifier as the optimal model for all fusion strategies, achieving high sensitivity (88% for hybrid, 92% for mid-level, and 96% for high-level) and specificity (88% for hybrid, mid-level, and high-level).

As 2030 approaches, the World Health Organization's due date for ending intestinal schistosomiasis as a public health problem in all endemic areas, understanding the current trends in the burden of schistosomiasis among schoolchildren in endemic areas is critical for monitoring the progress, identifying areas for improvement, and developing strategies to plan for instant response to mitigate the burden of schistosomiasis. From February to April of 2023, 328 students from three primary schools in Southwest Ethiopia participated in an institution-based cross-sectional study in the detection of Schistosoma mansoni. Intestinal schistosomiasis was identified among 242 school children, with a rate of infection of 73.
