An understanding of water's anomalies is closely linked to an understanding of the phase diagram of water's metastable noncrystalline states. Despite the considerable effort, such an understanding has remained elusive and many puzzles regarding phase transitions in supercooled liquid water and their possible amorphous proxies at low temperatures remain. Here, decompression of very high density amorphous ice (VHDA) from 1.1 to 0.02 GPa at 140 K is studied by means of dilatometry and powder x-ray diffraction of quench-recovered states. It is shown that the three amorphous states of ice are reversibly connected to each other, i.e., LDA<-->e-HDA<-->VHDA. However, while the downstroke VHDA-->e-HDA transition takes place in the pressure range of 0.06 GPaLDA transition takes place quasi-discontinuously at p approximately 0.06 GPa. That is, two amorphous-amorphous transitions of a distinct nature are observed for the first time in a one-component system-a first-order-like transition (e-HDA-->LDA) and a transition which is not first-order like but possibly of higher order (VHDA-->e-HDA). VHDA and e-HDA are established as the most stable and limiting states in the course of the transition. We interpret this as evidence disfavoring the hypothesis of multiple first-order liquid-liquid transitions (and the option of a third critical point), but favoring a single first-order liquid-liquid transition (and the option of a second critical point).

The glacial phase can be formed from supercooled liquid (SCL) in certain systems, which is called liquid-liquid transition (LLT). Revealing the nature of the glacial phase especially in a single-component system is crucial for understanding the LLT process. Here, by using flash differential scanning calorimetry and cold-field transmission electron microscopy, the structure of the d-mannitol glacial phase and the phase transition kinetics between the glacial phase and SCL were studied.

We investigate the first-order liquid-liquid phase transition in fluid hydrogen, which is accompanied by a nonmetal-to-metal transition. We use a combination of density functional theory for the electrons and molecular dynamics simulations for the ions. By employing the nonlocal Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional, we accurately determine the equation of state and the corresponding coexistence line.

The non-aqueous solid-liquid biphasic solvent of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP)/piperazine (PZ)/dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether (DME) features a high CO absorption loading, favorable phase separation behavior and high regeneration efficiency. Different with the liquid-liquid phase change solvent, the reaction kinetics of CO capture into solid-liquid biphasic solvent was rarely studied. In the present work, the reaction kinetics of CO absorption into AMP/PZ/DME solid-liquid biphasic solvent was investigated into the double stirred kettle reactor.

Discovering novel emergent behavior in quantum many-body systems is a main objective of contemporary research. In this Letter, we explore the effects on phases and phase transitions of the proximity to a Ruelle-Fisher instability, marking the transition to a collapsed state. To accomplish this, we study by quantum Monte Carlo simulations a two-dimensional system of soft-core bosons interacting through an isotropic finite-ranged attraction, with a parameter η describing its strength.

A reversible, first-order transition separating two liquid phases of a single-component material is a fascinating yet poorly understood phenomenon. Here, we investigate the liquid-liquid transition (LLT) ability of two tetraalkylphosphonium ionic liquids (ILs), [P]Cl and [P][1,2,4-triazolide], using differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric spectroscopy. The latter technique also allowed us to study the LLT at elevated pressure.
