We present a new formalism for the treatment and understanding of multispectral images and multisensor imagery based on first-order contrast information. Although little attention has been paid to the utility of multispectral contrast, we develop a theory for multispectral contrast that enables us to produce an optimal grayscale visualization of the first-order contrast of an image with an arbitrary number of bands. We demonstrate how our technique can reveal significantly more interpretive information to an image analyst, who can use it in a number of image understanding algorithms. Existing grayscale visualization strategies are reviewed. A variety of experimental results are presented to support the performance of the new method.

Corticocortical (CC) projections in the visual system facilitate hierarchical processing of sensory information. In addition to direct CC connections, indirect cortico-thalamo-cortical (CTC) pathways through the pulvinar nucleus of the thalamus can relay sensory signals and mediate cortical interactions according to behavioral demands. While the pulvinar connects extensively to the entire visual cortex, it is unknown whether transthalamic pathways link all cortical areas or whether they follow systematic organizational rules.

Purpose: The self is a multidimensional concept that can be represented at a pre-reflective (first-order) level, at a deeper, reflective level (second-order), or even at a meta-level (representing one's own thoughts, i.e. self-related mentalizing).

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) pose significant environmental and health risks, and their detoxification through catalytic hydrolysis using zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) has attracted considerable interest due to the strong Lewis acid metal ions. Albeit important, the defects of the materials for OP hydrolysis (e.g.

Adolescent-onset schizophrenia (AOS) is relatively rare, under-studied, and associated with more severe cognitive impairments and poorer outcomes than adult-onset schizophrenia. Neuroimaging has shown altered regional activations (first-order effects) and functional connectivity (second-order effects) in AOS compared to controls. The pairwise maximum entropy model (MEM) integrates first- and second-order factors into a single quantity called energy, which is inversely related to probability of occurrence of brain activity patterns.

Background: In medical diagnostics, estimating post-test or posterior probabilities for disease, positive and negative predictive values, and their associated uncertainty is essential for patient care.
Objective: The aim of this work is to introduce a software tool developed in the Wolfram Language for the parametric estimation, visualization, and comparison of Bayesian diagnostic measures and their uncertainty.
Methods: This tool employs Bayes' theorem to estimate positive and negative predictive values and posterior probabilities for the presence and absence of a disease.
