A cylindrical, collapsible, and economical field cage for mosquito research.

Published: December 2007

A new cage was designed to study caged mosquitoes in ultra-low volume insecticide spray studies in the field. Insecticide droplets may enter the cage from any direction because all surfaces are mesh. Cages can be collapsed in seconds, and reassembly is quick and simple. A 26-cm-diam cage can be constructed for less than US$6.00.

Although rare, penetrating cervical vascular injury poses significant challenges with a poor patient prognosis, often attributed to severe hemorrhage and accompanying injuries. We encountered a case of hemorrhagic shock resulting from a penetrating injury to the common carotid artery (CCA), which was successfully managed using a combination of endovascular therapy and direct surgical intervention. A 23-year-old man presented with a self-inflicted stab wound on the left side of his neck from a kitchen knife.

Compaction and clustering of a heterogeneous polymer by biomolecular crowding.

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario N2L 3G1, Canada.

Inspired by bacterial chromosome organization, we study the compaction and clustering of a heterogeneous ring polymer in a crowded medium using molecular dynamics simulations. The polymer consists of several large monomers interspersed along the backbone and small intervening monomers. In a crowded medium, the entropy of crowding particles or crowders favors the collapse of chain molecules, such as chromosomes.

Effects of spontaneous curvature on interfacial adsorption and collapse of phospholipid monolayers.

Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, Oregon, United States.

To function effectively, pulmonary surfactant must adsorb rapidly to the alveolar air/water interface but avoid collapse from the surface when compressed to high interfacial densities. Prior studies show that phospholipids in the cylindrical monolayers of the inverse hexagonal (H) phase adsorb quickly. The monolayers have negative curvature, defined by the concave shape of the hydrophilic face.

Cylindrical compression of thin wires by irradiation with a Joule-class short-pulse laser.

Nat Commun

Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Bautzner Landstraße 400, Dresden, 01328, Germany.

Equation of state measurements at Jovian or stellar conditions are currently conducted by dynamic shock compression driven by multi-kilojoule multi-beam nanosecond-duration lasers. These experiments require precise design of the target and specific tailoring of the spatial and temporal laser profiles to reach the highest pressures. At the same time, the studies are limited by the low repetition rate of the lasers.

Recently, Saudi growers have expanded their production of organic, soilless-grown strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.), but their production shows many difficulties associated with disease susceptibility. In October 2021, 45% of strawberry plants cv.
