Published: February 2008

We describe the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of two decanuclear Fe(III) complexes with novel core topologies, assembled using the tetra-deprotonated form of Bis-tris {2-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]-2-(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol, H5L}.

Low-cost and effective electrocatalysts are critical for energy storage and conversion. Herein, iron(III) and vanadium(III) acetylacetonates were first adsorbed and confined in porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), which further cross-linked together by the methanol-induced-assembly. Following the pyrolysis, the FeVO nanoparticles were efficiently encapsulated within three-dimensional (3D) N-doped interconnected porous carbon, termed FeVO/NIPC.

University of Melbourne, School of Chemistry, Grattan Street, Parkville, 3052, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • - A new crystalline compound has been discovered, consisting of a ferric acetate unit and formed from hydrated iron(III) nitrate and acetic anhydride, with the chemical notation [Fe(CHO)O(CHO)].
  • - The structure features individual [FeO(OAc)] units linked by bridging acetate ions to create zigzag chains, with unique coordination of a carbonyl group from acetic acid at one of the iron centers.
  • - This is the first time an acetic acid molecule has been reported coordinating with an iron ion, showing a weaker bond that contrasts with a similar manganese compound affected by the Jahn-Teller effect.

Article Synopsis
  • A neutral iron(III) complex hydrate based on pyruvic acid thiosemicarbazone was synthesized and analyzed using various methods like FT-IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, with its structure being reported for the first time.
  • The structure features an octahedron geometry around the Fe(III) ion formed by two ligands, resulting in unique interactions, including π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding.
  • Notably, the magnetic properties show a spin-crossover phenomenon at temperatures between 300-363 K, revealing weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between iron(III) centers, confirmed by theoretical calculations.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed starch-based porous cryogels aimed at tissue engineering, combining materials like κ-carrageenan, PVA, and SbQ.
  • They created a conductive version of the cryogel by oxidizing EDOT to enhance electrical properties, utilizing iron(III) p-toluenesulfonate.
  • Tests showed that varying biopolymer content could effectively tune the cryogel's mechanical properties, with κ-carrageenan enhancing stiffness and PVA acting as a plasticizer, while cross-linking with PVA-SBQ further improved these properties.

Nitrogen (N) fertilization in paddy soils decreases arsenic mobility and methane emissions. However, it is unknown how quantity and frequency of N fertilization affects the interlinked redox reactions of iron(II)-driven denitrification, iron mineral (trans-)formation with subsequent arsenic (im-)mobilization, methane and nitrous oxide emissions, and how this links to microbiome composition. Thus, we incubated paddy soil from Vercelli, Italy, over 129 days and applied nitrate fertilizer at different concentrations (control: 0, low: ∼35, medium: ∼100, high: ∼200 mg N kg soil) once at the beginning and after 49 days.
