Background: There is no evidence in the current literature of any significant improvement in clinical outcome when comparing computer-assisted total knee arthroplasty (CATKA) with conventional implantation. Analyses of alignment and of component orientation have shown both significant and non-significant differences between the two methods.

Objectives: We compared computer-assisted and conventional surgery for TKA at 5.4 years follow-up for patients with varus osteoarthritic knees. Our goal was to assess clinical outcome and restoration of normal limb alignment.

Materials And Methods: We performed a retrospective case-control study comparing 30 patients who underwent CATKA with 30 subjects who underwent TKA by conventional methods. Patients were matched individually by preoperative clinical conditions and alignment. We analysed intraoperative data (surgical time and intraoperative complications), postoperative complications, lower limb alignment, radiographic complication on X-ray imaging, and clinical outcome through knee and function score and range of motion.

Results And Discussion: We found no significant clinical difference between the two groups at 5 years post-surgery. However there was a statistically significant improvement in the restoration of the mechanical axis of the lower limb in the coronal plane but not in the sagittal plane. Whether or not this leads to a higher survival rate in the longer term requires further investigation.

Structural brain basis of latent factors of executive functions in childhood.

Dev Cogn Neurosci

December 2024

Division of Psychology and Language Sciences, UCL, London WC1H 0AP, UK. Electronic address:

Executive functions can be classified into processes of inhibition, working memory and shifting, which together support flexible and goal-directed behaviour and are crucial for both current and later-life outcomes. A large body of literature has identified distinct brain regions critical to performing each of these functions. These findings are however predicated on a piecemeal and single-task approach.

Background: Manual extraction of real-world clinical data for research can be time-consuming and prone to error. We assessed the feasibility of using natural language processing (NLP), an AI technique, to automate data extraction for patients with advanced lung cancer (aLC). We assessed the external validity of our NLP-extracted data by comparing our findings to those reported in the literature.

Background: Early intervention is effective for reducing ADHD symptoms and related impairments, yet methods of identifying young children in need of services are lacking. Most early predictors of ADHD previously identified are of limited clinical utility. This study examines several theoretically relevant predictors of ADHD in infancy and toddlerhood and whether assessment at multiple time points improves prediction.

Prognostic Value of Myocardial CT-ECV in Severe Aortic Stenosis Requiring Aortic Valve Replacement: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Imaging

January 2025

Department of Perioperative Cardiology and Cardiovascular Imaging, Centro Cardiologico Monzino IRCCS, Milan, Italy.

Aim: Computed tomography (CT)-derived extracellular volume fraction (ECV) is a non-invasive method to quantify myocardial fibrosis. Evaluating CT-ECV during aortic valve replacement (AVR) planning CT in severe aortic stenosis (AS) may aid prognostic stratification. This meta-analysis evaluated the prognostic significance of CT-ECV in severe AS necessitating AVR.

Endometrium-Free Closure Technique During Cesarean Delivery for Reducing the Risk of Niche Formation and Placenta Accreta Spectrum Disorders.

Obstet Gynecol

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Biostatistics, Department of Population Health, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, New York, New York; and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, Nutley, and Maternal Resources, Hoboken, New Jersey.

Objective: To examine the prevalence and severity of postcesarean residual niche, evaluated using saline infusion sonohysterography, in an expanded cohort of women with one prior cesarean delivery and to assess the effect of uterine closure technique on the risk of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorders.

Methods: This secondary analysis includes 70 patients who underwent saline infusion sonohysterography after one prior cesarean delivery. Patients were grouped according to hysterotomy closure technique: two-layer endometrium-free closure (technique A), and two- or one-layer routine closures (technique B).
