Standing Friedel waves: a quantum probe of electronic states in nanoscale devices.

Published: November 2007

We report a theoretical study of the dynamic response of electrons in a metallic nanowire or a two-dimensional electron gas under a capacitively coupled "spot gate" driven by an ac voltage. A dynamic standing Friedel wave (SFW) is formed near the spot gate and near edges and boundaries, analogous to the static Friedel oscillations near defects. The SFW wavelength is controlled by the ac voltage frequency and the device's Fermi velocity, whereby the latter can be measured. In addition, the SFW amplitude exhibits resonant behavior at driving frequencies that are related to eigenenergy spacings in the device, allowing their direct measurement.

Organic Chemistry, CeiA3, CIAIMBITAL, University of Almería, 04120 Almeria, Spain.

Meroterpenoid-type marine natural compounds have attracted an increasing amount of attention due to their peculiar chemical structures and their potential for the development of therapeutically important probes. Within this group of substances pelorol stands out; it is a natural compound isolated from marine organisms with a unique structure and an interesting biological profile. In this article, we summarize and highlight the most interesting aspects of the synthetic procedures towards this compound, which have two common key steps.

Hyper cross-linked polymers (HCPs), as a key precursor of hard carbon (HC) anode materials, stand out because of their capacity for molecular-scale structural design and comparatively straightforward preparation techniques, which are not seen in other porous materials synthesized procedure. A novel synthesis method of HCPs is developed in this paper, which is through the incorporation of functional macromolecules, the structural control and heteroatom doping of the product has been achieved, thus augmenting its electrochemical performance in batteries. In this work, carbonized tetraphenylporphyrin zinc (TPP-Zn) doped HCP-based hard carbon (CTHCP) with stable structure was prepared by Friedel-Crafts reaction and carbonization by using naphthalene and trace TPP-Zn as monomers, dimethoxybenzene (DMB) as crosslinking agent and FeCl as catalyst.

Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of height profiles, along the chains of Si atoms on the terrace edges of a perfectly ordered Si(553)-Au surface, reveal an STM bias-dependent mixed periodicity with periods of one, two and one and a half lattice constants. The simple linear chain model usually observed with STM cannot explain the unexpected fractional periodicity in the height profile. It was found that the edge Si chain stands for, in fact, a zigzag structure, which is composed of two neighboring rows of Si atoms and was detected in the STM experiments.

Real-time monitoring of bioanalytes in organotypic cell cultivation devices is a major research challenge in establishing stand-alone diagnostic systems. Presently, no general technical facility is available that offers a plug-in system for bioanalytics in diversely available organotypic culture models. Therefore, each analytical device has to be tuned according to the microfluidic and interface environment of the 3D in vitro system.

Alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons is among the most industrially important reactions, employing acid catalysts such as AlCl, HSO, HF, or HPO. However, these catalysts present severe drawbacks, such as low selectivity and high corrosiveness. Taking advantage of the intrinsic high acid strength and Lewis and Brønsted acidity of niobium oxide, we have designed the first series of NbO-SiO(HIPE) monolithic catalysts bearing multiscale porosity through the integration of a sol-gel process and the physical chemistry of complex fluids.
