The periodic shell structure and surface reconstruction of metallic FePt nanoparticles with icosahedral structure has been quantitatively studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with focal series reconstruction with sub-angstrom resolution. The icosahedral FePt nanoparticles fabricated by the gas phase condensation technique in vacuum have been found to be surprisingly oxidation resistant and stable under electron beam irradiation. We find the lattice spacing of (111) planes in the surface region to be size dependent and to expand by as much as 9% with respect to the bulk value of Fe52Pt48. Controlled removal of the (111) surface layers in situ results in a similar outward relaxation of the new surface layer. This unusually large layerwise outward relaxation is discussed in terms of preferential Pt segregation to the surface forming a Pt enriched shell around a Fe-rich Fe/Pt core.

Considering factors such as crustal reserves, atomic mass, redox potential and energy density, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are regarded as the most promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Transition metal-based layered oxides, especially typical NaMnO, stand out among cathode materials due to their low cost and high energy density. However, NaMnO cathodes face several challenges, including Jahn-Teller distortion, manganese dissolution, structural collapse, irreversible phase transition and significant capacity loss.

Background: Given the distinctive physiological characteristics of pregnant women, non-pharmacological therapies are increasingly being used to improve depressive and anxiety symptoms. Our objective was to explore and compare the impact of various non-pharmacological interventions in improving depressive and anxiety symptoms, and to identify the most effective strategies for pregnant women with depressive and/or anxiety symptoms.
Methods: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared non-pharmacological interventions to usual care, from the inception of each database up to October 5, 2024.

Oxygen vacancies (V's) are of paramount importance in influencing the properties and applications of ceria (CeO). Yet, comprehending the distribution and nature of V's poses a significant challenge due to the vast number of electronic configurations and intricate many-body interactions among V's and polarons (Ce ions). In this study, we established a cluster expansion model based on first-principles calculations and statistical learning to decouple the interactions among the Ce ions and V's, thereby circumventing the limitations associated with sampling electronic configurations.

We investigated the temperature dependence of the intermolecular dynamics, including intermolecular vibrations and collective orientational relaxation, of one of the most typical deep eutectic solvents, reline, using femtosecond Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy (fs-RIKES), subpicosecond optical Kerr effect spectroscopy (ps-OKES), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. According to fs-RIKES results, the temperature-dependent intermolecular vibrational band peak at ∼90 cm exhibited a redshift with increasing temperature. The density-of-state (DOS) spectrum of reline by MD simulations reproduced this fs-RIKES spectral feature.

Self-assembled cartilaginous microtissues provide a promising means of repairing challenging skeletal defects and connective tissues. However, despite their considerable promise in tissue engineering, the mechanical response of these engineered microtissues is not well understood. Here we examine the mechanical and viscoelastic response of progenitor cell aggregates formed from human primary periosteal cells and the resulting cartilaginous microtissues under large deformations as might be encountered in vivo.
