The auditory startle response (ASR) is a brainstem reflex elicited by an unexpected acoustic stimulus. In focal dystonia (FD), the excitability of brainstem neurons is abnormally enhanced. To identify a possible impact of this pathology on the processing of acoustic stimuli, we studied the habituation of the ASR in patients (n = 11) with FD and compared the findings to those of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD; n = 11) and controls (n = 11). Latencies in FD patients did not differ from those of controls but were delayed in PD patients compared to controls (p < 0.0001). Habituation was normal at the orbicularis oculi muscles but reduced at the sternocleidomastoid muscles in FD (p = 0.005). Habituation in PD was comparable to controls. Normal latencies and sequence activation indicate intact neural pathways mediating the ASR in FD. Impaired habituation of the ASR points towards a reduced inhibition of acoustic stimuli in FD.

Tinnitus, a widespread condition affecting numerous individuals worldwide, remains a significant challenge due to limited effective therapeutic interventions. Intriguingly, patients using cochlear implants (CIs) have reported significant relief from tinnitus symptoms, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and intracochlear implantation risks cochlear damage and hearing loss. This study demonstrates that targeted intracochlear electrical stimulation (ES) in guinea pigs with noise-induced hearing loss reversed tinnitus-related maladaptive plasticity in the cochlear nucleus (CN), characterized by reduced auditory innervation, increased somatosensory innervation, and diminished inhibitory neural networks.

Psychological resilience is a key factor for societal and military stability when faced with terror attacks and/or war. The research presents physiological findings-obtained with the electrodermal activity (EDA) and Auditory Sustained Attention Test (ASAT)-on stress responses, attentional and emotion regulation abilities in 57 Israel Defense Force male and female combat soldiers during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. In addition, it shows self-reported resilience scores and post traumatic symptomatology measured by questionnaires and explores the relationship between the subjective and objective data.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) refers to the phenomenon in which a weak sensory stimulus before a strong one significantly reduces the startle reflex caused by the strong stimulus. Perceptual spatial separation, a phenomenon where auditory cues from the prepulse and background noise are distinguished in space, has been shown to enhance PPI. Noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy has been studied for over 25 years with no known diagnosis for this disorder in humans. This type of "hidden hearing loss" induces a loss of synapses in the inner ear but no change in audiometric thresholds. Recent studies have shown that by two months post synaptopathy-inducing noise exposure, synapses in some animal species can regenerate.

The ability to perceive a tactile stimulus is reduced in a moving limb, a phenomenon known as tactile suppression. This sensory attenuation effect is attributed to movement-related gating, which allows the central nervous system to selectively process sensory information. However, the source of this gating is uncertain, with some evidence suggesting a forward-model origin of tactile suppression, and other evidence in support of backward masking from peripheral reafference.
