Published: March 2008

This study explores the relationship between PEN profiles, delinquency, and recidivism in young offenders. According to Eysenck, personality is based on three basic Dimensions: Psychoticism, Extraversion, and Neuroticism (PEN-model). Eysenck states that delinquents score high on all three dimensions. A group of young male offenders in a juvenile detention center in The Netherlands were studied to test Eysenck's hypothesis, which was partially confirmed. From a cluster analysis it appear that only a small group of offenders had high scores on all three PEN dimensions. Finally, it was concluded that the PEN profiles were not able to differentiate between recidivists and nonrecidivists.

Effects of drinking water supplemented with apple vinegar, essential oils, or colistin sulfate on growth performance, blood lipids, antioxidant status, intestinal morphology, and gut microflora of broiler chickens.

Poult Sci

January 2025

School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability, The University of Queensland, Gatton Campus, Gatton, QLD 4343, Australia; Department of Animal and Poultry Nutrition, Faculty of Animal Science, Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Gorgan 49189-4364, Iran.

With rising concerns about antibiotic resistance and its consequences on public health, the identification of safe and effective alternatives to antibiotics in the poultry industry has become increasingly critical. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementing drinking water with apple vinegar and essential oils, compared to an antibiotic growth promoter, on the growth performance, serum lipid profile, antioxidant status, intestinal morphology, and gastrointestinal microflora population of broiler chickens. A total of 240 one-day-old male broiler chickens were randomly assigned to four treatments, each consisting of six replicate pens with ten birds per pen.

Introduction: The Brisbane Burn Scar Impact Profile (BBSIP) and the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) are used in burn scar assessment to quantify patient health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). These questionnaires were developed using pen-and-paper delivery methods; however, there is a push towards electronic delivery of these questionnaires in both clinical practice and research. Equivalence testing is required to ensure that validity of these paper questionnaires is maintained electronically.

Machine Learning for Predicting Zearalenone Contamination Levels in Pet Food.

Toxins (Basel)

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Feed Biotechnology, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Institute of Feed Research, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, No. 12 Zhongguancun South Street, Beijing 100081, China.

Zearalenone (ZEN) has been detected in both pet food ingredients and final products, causing acute toxicity and chronic health problems in pets. Therefore, the early detection of mycotoxin contamination in pet food is crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of animals. This study aims to develop a rapid and cost-effective method using an electronic nose (E-nose) and machine learning algorithms to predict whether ZEN levels in pet food exceed the regulatory limits (250 µg/kg), as set by Chinese pet food legislation.

Background: Patients with tuberculosis (TB) often harbor diverse bacteria in their sputum, including both commensal and opportunistic pathogens. This study aimed to characterize the sputum microbiota of TB patients before and after the intensive phase of anti-TB treatment and assess changes in bacterial diversity and antibiotic resistance profiles.

Methods: A total of 162 patients with TB (128 males, 34 females; age range 18-82 years) provided sputum samples at baseline, of which 72 provided follow-up sputum after two months of intensive phase treatment.

Suprachoroidal Triamcinolone Acetonide for Noninfectious Uveitis: Real-World Impact on Clinical Outcomes.

Am J Ophthalmol

December 2024

From the Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Science, University of California (K.P., A.H., P.E.-N., G.Y., K.M.), Davis, Sacramento, California, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effects of suprachoroidal triamcinolone acetonide (TA) injections on patients with noninfectious uveitis, focusing on key outcomes like central subfield thickness (CST) and visual acuity.
  • Data was collected from 61 eyes of 51 patients over two years, revealing a significant reduction in CST from 437.61 microns to 348.17 microns within 6 weeks following treatment, along with an improvement in fluorescein angiography scores.
  • Results showed that while some patients needed additional treatment for macular edema over time, 41.2% of those followed for 24 weeks did not require further interventions, and
