We have studied the modulation and differential sensitivity of the estrogen receptor (ER) in breast cancer in the presence of protecting or modifying agents of disulfide bonds and sulfhydryl groups present in the ER steroid-binding domain. Protecting agents such as mercaptoethanol and dithiotreitol increased the [(3)H]estradiol binding to ER by 25% and 50%, respectively. Modifying agents such as p-chloromercuribenzensulfonate decreased the [(3)H]estradiol binding by 70% and this was nearly completely abolished by N-ethylmaleimide (94%). These data indicate that disulfide bonds and sulfhydryl groups in the steroid-binding domain are intimately involved in the maintenance of a receptor structure necessary for estradiol binding.

Glutathione (GSH) plays an important role in maintaining redox homeostasis in biological systems. Development of reliable glutathione sensors is of great significance to better understand the role of biomolecules in living cells and organisms. Based on the advantages of the photophysical properties of iridium complexes, we proposed a "turn-on" phosphorescent sensor.

Food allergens are defined by their stability during digestion, with allergenicity largely influenced by resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis. Ovalbumin (OVA), a major egg protein, is a significant contributor to food allergies, particularly in children. Our previous work demonstrated that high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment reduces OVA allergenicity by disrupting conformational epitopes and altering its structure.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of a combination of carnitines, L-arginine, L-cysteine and myo-inositol on metabolic and reproductive parameters in PCOS overweight/obese patients.
Methods: This was a retrospective study analyzing information of a group of PCOS ( = 25) overweight/obesity patients, not requiring hormonal treatment, selected from the database of the ambulatory clinic of the Gynecological Endocrinology Center at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena, Italy. The hormonal profile, routine exams and insulin and C-peptide response to oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were evaluated before and after 12 weeks of a daily oral complementary treatment with L-carnitine (500 mg), acetyl-L-carnitine (250 mg), L-arginine (500 mg), L-cysteine (100 mg) and myo-inositol (1 gr).

Background: Allostatic load and oxidative stress (OS) markers differ in women with and without preeclampsia. However, there is no difference in allostatic load and OS markers between late-onset preeclampsia (L-OP) and early-onset preeclampsia (E-OP). This study aimed to compare the concentrations of allostatic load and OS markers in pregnant women with L-OP and E-OP.

The combination of polyphenols and protein can improve the functional characteristics of protein. How to effectively promote the binding of polyphenols to protein is still a difficult topic. In this study, hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) was used to induce the fabrication of complexes between soy protein isolate (SPI) and different polyphenols (tannic acid (TA), chlorogenic acid (CGA), ferulic acid (FA), caffeic acid (CA), and gallic acid (GA)).
