1. The reoxidation of reduced Rhus vernicifera laccase (monophenol, dihydroxyphenylalanine:oxygen oxidoreductase, EC 1.14.18.1) by molecular oxygen has been studied by optical absorption and EPR methods. 2. The reoxidation by oxygen of the type 1 Cu+ and the two-electron acceptor is characterized by a second-order rate constant of about 5-10(6) M-1-s-1. 3. The appearance of an optical intermediate (with an absorbance maximum around 360 nm) parallels the reoxidation of type 1 Cu+ and the two-electron acceptor. It disappears in a first-order reaction with a half-time of 20 s. A similar intermediate is formed during normal turnover. 4. The type 2 Cu+ appears to be reoxidized in an intramolecular reaction with a half-time of about 20 s, suggesting a correlation between the reoxidation of this site and the disappearance of the optical intermediate. 5. The results suggest that three electrons are rapidly transferred to oxygen leading to the formation of an enzyme-bound oxygen intermediate.

As reported during the last five years, SnSe is one of the leading thermoelectric (TE) materials with a very low lattice thermal conductivity. However, its elements are not as heavy as those of classical thermoelectric materials like PbTe or BiTe. Its outstanding TE properties were revealed after repeated purification steps to minimize the amount of oxygen contamination, followed by spark plasma sintering.

Mine tailings are a byproduct of mineral extraction and often pose an environmental challenge due to the contamination of soil and water bodies with dissolved metals. However, this type of waste offers the opportunity for the recovery of valuable metals such as silver (Ag). In the present investigation, an integral analysis of a sample of tailings was carried out, addressing granulometry, elemental composition, neutralization potential (NP), and acid potential (AP), as well as mineralogy, for the dissolution of silver from this type of waste.

Thermus thermophilus HB27 laccase (Tth-Lac) is a thermostable enzyme that contains a β-hairpin (Ala292-Gln307) covering the substrate entrance. We analyzed the role of this β-hairpin in the enzymatic activity of Tth-Lac through three β-hairpin mutants: two variants without the β-hairpin (C1Tth-Lac and C2Tth-Lac) and one with a partially modified β-hairpin (P1Tth-Lac). Enzymatic activity was assayed with different substrates with and without copper.

Background: Fungal invasive infections caused by Candida species pose a substantial public health risk with limited therapeutic options. Antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) is necessary to optimize the therapy. The study aimed to compare different AFST methods of Candida spp.

People in Eastern Asia, including Japan, traditionally consume higher amounts of sodium chloride than in the United States and Western Europe, and it is common knowledge that impaired insulin secretion-rather than insulin resistance-is highly prevalent in Asian people who have diabetes mellitus. We previously reported that mice fed a high-fat and high-sodium chloride (HFHS) diet had a relatively lower degree of obesity than mice fed a high-fat diet, but had a comparatively impaired insulin secretion. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have been shown to dampen down the sympathetic nervous system, which reportedly is activated by a high-sodium chloride diet.
