Many drugs that serve as first-line medications for the treatment of depression are associated with severe side effects, including liver injury. Of the 34 antidepressants discussed in this review, four have been withdrawn from the market due to severe hepatotoxicity, and others carry boxed warnings for idiosyncratic liver toxicity. The clinical and economic implications of antidepressant-induced liver injury are substantial, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive.

The emergence of disinfectant-resistant pathogens in water is a major threat to public health. However, whether human-consumed pharmaceuticals can induce bacterial resistance to disinfectants remains unclear. Herein, Escherichia coli was exposed to 12 antidepressants, and susceptibility of antidepressant-induced chloramphenicol (CHL)-resistant mutants to disinfectants was tested.

Since exploding rates of modern mental diseases, application of antidepressants has increased. Worryingly, the antidepressant-induced liver injury has gradually become a serious health burden. Furthermore, since most of the knowledge about antidepressant hepatotoxicity are from pharmacovigilance and clinical case reports and lack of observational studies, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood and there is a lack of efficient treatment strategies.
