Background: Maize is frequently contaminated by aflatoxin B (AFB), an established liver carcinogen.
Objectives: The objective of this study is to estimate the effect of maize and maize tortilla consumption on AFB-lysine adduct (AFB-lys) concentrations in middle- and older-aged adults living in south and eastern Mexico.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis in a representative sample of 915 adults aged ≥40 y living in south and eastern Mexico in 2018-2019.

Circulating citrate may serve as a proxy for mitochondrial dysfunction which plays a role in the progression of end-stage liver disease (ESLD). This study aimed to determine the extent of alterations in circulating citrate in patients with ESLD, and examined its association with all-cause mortality among ESLD patients while on the waiting list for liver transplantation. Plasma citrate levels were measured using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in 129 ESLD patients (TransplantLines cohort study; NCT03272841) and compared to levels in 4837 participants of the community-dwelling PREVEND cohort.

Circulating metabolic profiles have shown promising potential in identifying high-risk populations for various diseases, while metabolic perturbation plays an important role in gastric cancer. In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional study with 1800 participants to identify plasma metabolite signatures associated with environmental risk factors of gastric cancer. Subsequently, we evaluated the association between these signatures and gastric cancer risk in a nested case-control study involving 326 gastric cancer cases and 326 matched cancer-free controls.

Background: Individuals with normal weight obesity (NWO) often escape the attention of healthcare providers who may assume that a normal body mass index (BMI) correlates with low health risks. However, it remains unknown whether NWO increases the risk of breast cancer.
Methods: This study included 22,257 and 52,506 pre- and postmenopausal females with normal BMI in the UK Biobank.
