Biologic scaffolds composed of extracellular matrix (ECM) have been used to facilitate the repair and reconstruction of a variety of tissues in clinical and pre-clinical studies. The clinical utility of such scaffolds can be limited by the geometric and mechanical properties of the tissue or organ from which the ECM is harvested. An injectable gel form of ECM could potentially conform to any three-dimensional shape and could be delivered to sites of interest by minimally invasive techniques. The objectives of the present study were to prepare a gel form of ECM harvested from the urinary bladder (urinary bladder matrix or UBM), to characterize the rheological properties of the gel, and finally to evaluate the ability of the gel to support in vitro growth of smooth muscle cells. Following enzymatic solubilization with pepsin, UBM was induced to self-assemble into a gel when brought to physiological conditions. The UBM gel supported the adhesion and growth of rat aortic smooth muscle cells when cultured under static in vitro conditions. The present study showed that an intact form of UBM can be successfully solubilized without purification steps and induced to repolymerize into a gel form of the UBM biologic scaffold material.

Purpose: To evaluate the predictive accuracy of various machine learning (ML) statistical models in forecasting postoperative visual acuity (VA) outcomes following macular hole (MH) surgery using preoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters.

Methods: This retrospective study included 158 eyes (151 patients) with full-thickness MHs treated between 2017 and 2023 by the same surgeon and using the same intraoperative surgical technique. Data from electronic medical records and OCT scans were extracted, with OCT-derived qualitative and quantitative MH characteristics recorded.

As part of the intestinal microbiota, can elicit a humoral response in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) that is mainly directed toward hyphal antigens. This response has been implicated in controlling the invasive form of the fungus and maintaining the yeast as an innocuous commensal. However, the specific targets of this response are still unknown.

Introduction: Toothbrushing, during which dental plaque is brushed off into the oral cavity, can increase the risk of aspiration pneumonia in older adults and intubated patients.

Methods: This study examined brushing methods to prevent the spread of bacteria in the oral cavity. Six participants who required assistance with brushing received toothbrushing from a dental hygienist.

The plasmonic metal doping on the UV-active metal oxide nanoparticle turns the resultant plasmonic metal-metal oxide (PMMO) into visible light active and upon exogenous illumination the photogenerated energetic charge carriers and the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS, e.g. ·OH and O ) authoritatively enhances its biological and catalytic activity.
