Background: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a congenital, clinically and ultrastructurally heterogeneous disease caused by abnormal structure and/or function of cilia. Kartagener's syndrome is one subgroup of PCD. Acquired ciliary dyskinesia is frequent, generally being associated with or following respiratory tract infections.
Methods: From January 2003 to April 2006, nasal mucociliary transport time was measured in 64 patients and specimens obtained by nasal scraping were examined by transmission electron microscope (TEM).
Results: The 64 nasal scrapings led to the diagnosis of 11 (17.2%) cases of PCD and 51 (79.7%) cases of secondary ciliary disorder. In two cases (3.1%) no clear diagnosis was possible.
Conclusion: Nasal scraping is an easy, cheap, and efficient tool for detecting ciliary abnormalities by TEM and for distinguishing acquired and congenital modifications.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its variants are a continuous threat to human life. An urgent need remains for simple and fast tests that reliably detect active infections with SARS-CoV-2 and its variants in the early stage of infection. Here we introduce a simple and rapid activity-based diagnostic (ABDx) test that identifies SARS-CoV-2 infections by measuring the activity of a viral enzyme, Papain-Like protease (PLpro).

Transcrestal maxillary sinus floor elevation is an effective method to solve the problem of insufficient bone height in the posterior maxillary region. However, current methods, such as osteotome sinus floor elevation, cushioned grind-out technique, Smart Drill technique, etc., require specialized surgical tool boxes.

Background: Oncostatin M (OSM) may be involved in the promotion of mucosal epithelial barrier dysfunction in patients with eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (Eos CRSwNP) by inducing matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) -1 and -7. The aim was to evaluate the roles and mechanisms of action of OSM on MMP-1 and -7 synthesis from nasal epithelial cells (NECs).
Methods: OSM, OSM receptor (OSMR), MMP-1 and -7 expression was evaluated in nasal mucosa or primary NECs from scrapings by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry.

Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark
Background: Atopic diseases, obesity and neuropsychiatric disorders are lifestyle-related and environmental-related chronic inflammatory disorders, and the incidences have increased in the last years.
Objective: To outline the design of the 18-year follow-up of the Copenhagen Prospective Study on Asthma in Childhood (COPSAC) birth cohort, where risk factors of atopic diseases, obesity and neuropsychiatric disorders are identified through extensive characterisation of the environment, along with deep clinical phenotyping and biosampling for omics profiling.
Methods: COPSAC is a Danish prospective clinical birth cohort study of 411 children born to mothers with asthma who were enrolled at 1 month of age and closely followed at the COPSAC clinical research unit through childhood for the development of atopic diseases.
