Dissipation and movement of flumioxazin in soil at four field sites in Chile.

Published: May 2008

Background: Flumioxazin is a soil-applied herbicide recommended for broadleaf weed control in soybeans and peanuts, and was recently introduced for vineyard weed management. Considering the limited information available in relation to flumioxazin field soil behaviour, the main objectives of this study were to determine the persistence, adsorption and movement of flumioxazin in soil in four Chilean vineyard production areas.

Results: DT(50) values ranged from 10.6 +/- 1.0 to 32.1 +/- 3.1 days between localities, being correlated with rain events, time between herbicide application and first heavy rain event, and soil pH. Flumioxazin soil residue found at 90 days after application (DAA) varied from 9.6 to 24.9% of the initial amount applied, and depended on the total rainfall amount that occurred during the first 90 DAA. Herbicide leaching below 15 cm was approximately 45% of the flumioxazin detected at 90 DAA in the whole soil profile. Flumioxazin maximum leaching soil depth was 45 cm at all locations. K(d) values varied from 2.54 to 6.51 mg L(-1), depending on localities and soil profile depth, and correlated positively with organic carbon and clay content.

Conclusions: These results indicate that flumioxazin is a herbicide with low environmental risk owing to its short DT(50), reduced soil residues 3 months after application and low effective dose.

The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of pre-emergence herbicides mixture applied to the soil with and without dead cover crops () for the control of L. (smooth pigweed) and its selectivity in soybeans. This study was structured in split plot (2 × 6 + 2), where factor A plots (with and without dead cover) and factor B six herbicides mixture: flumioxazin + S-metolachlor (50.

Pesticides and microplastics (MPs) derived from mulch film in agricultural soil can independently impact soil ecology, yet the consequences of their combined exposure remain unclear. Therefore, the effects of simultaneous exposure to commonly used pesticides (imidacloprid and flumioxazin) and aged mulch film-derived MPs on soil microorganisms and element cycles in cotton fields were investigated. The combined exposure influenced soil microorganisms, alongside processes related to carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles, exhibiting effects that were either neutralized or enhanced compared to individual exposures.

The use of mixtures of pesticides and consecutive pesticide applications challenge current regulations aimed at protecting ecosystem health due to unpredictable effects of complex and dynamic mixtures. In this study, we tested the ecotoxicological effects of mixtures of herbicides, applied following a real application scheme of soybean production on soil health in a mesocosm experiment. The experiment included two sequential applications; first, glyphosate + dicamba + clethodim, and 30 days later, flumioxazin + metolachlor.

Imazethapyr and flumioxazin are widely recommended herbicides for soybean fields due to their broad-spectrum effects. However, although both herbicides present low persistence, their potential impact on the community of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) is unclear. To address this gap, this study assessed the short-term effect of imazethapyr, flumioxazin, and their mixture on the PGPB community.

Microplastics mulch film affects the environmental behavior of adsorption and degradation of pesticide residues in soil.

Article Synopsis
  • Plastic pollution, particularly microplastics (MPs) in soil, is gaining global attention, but their impact on pesticide behavior in soil is not well understood.
  • The study examines how different types of MPs (new, aged, and biodegradable) affect the adsorption and degradation of two pesticides (imidacloprid and flumioxazin) in soil, showing that MPs can alter the speed and strength of pesticide adsorption and degradation.
  • Results reveal that new-MPs accelerate pesticide breakdown while aged and biodegradable MPs slow it down, highlighting the influence of MPs' characteristics on pesticide behavior in soil ecosystems.
