Published: February 2008

Over the past decade, solvent resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) has gained a lot of attention, as it is a promising energy- and waste-efficient unit process to separate mixtures down to a molecular level. This critical review focuses on all aspects related to this new burgeoning technology, occasionally also including literature obtained on aqueous applications or related membrane processes, if of relevance to understand SRNF better. An overview of the different membrane materials and the methods to turn them into suitable SRNF-membranes will be given first. The membrane transport mechanism and its modelling will receive attention in order to understand the process and the reported membrane performances better. Finally, all SRNF-applications reported so far - in food chemistry, petrochemistry, catalysis, pharmaceutical manufacturing - will be reviewed exhaustively (324 references).

Vanadium dioxide (VO) is a phase transition material that undergoes semiconductor-to-metal transition at the temperature of about 68 °C. This extraordinary feature triggered intensive research focused on the controlled synthesis of VO. In this study, we introduce and investigate an original linker- and solvent-free strategy enabling the production of highly porous VO nanoparticle-based films.

Efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) optical waveguides have significant potential for advancing photonic and optoelectronic devices. However, the development of CPL optical waveguides materials (OWMs) with low optical loss coefficient remains a considerable challenge. To overcome this, we design and synthesize CPL OWMs based on room-temperature phosphorescent liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs).

Utilizing cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to mimic biological skin capable of converting external stimuli into optical and electrical signals represents a significant advancement in the development of advanced photonic materials. However, traditional CNC photonic materials typically exhibit static and singular optical properties, with their structural color and mechanical performance being susceptible to water molecules, thereby limiting their practical applications. In this study, CNC-based conductive elastomers with dynamic mechanochromism, fluorescence responsiveness, and enhanced water resistance were developed by incorporating carbon quantum dots (C QDs) and hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES) into CNC photonic films via an in-situ swelling-photopolymerization method.

December 2024

Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino (ICVV) (Universidad de La Rioja, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Gobierno de La Rioja), 26007 Logroño, Spain.

The objectives of this study were to obtain and characterise polyphenolic extracts from red grape pomace of L. cv Graciano via conventional solvent extraction (SE) and green supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and to evaluate their antibacterial activity against susceptible and multidrug-resistant strains of intestinal origin. The SE and SFE methods were optimised, and ultra-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (UPLC/QqQ-MS/MS) analysis revealed 38 phenolic compounds in the SE sample, with anthocyanins being the predominant polyphenols, and 21 phenolic compounds in the SFE samples, among which hydroxybenzoic acids and flavonols were the predominant compounds.
