Urinary amino acids were isolated from the urine of healthy controls and a patient with a short bowel syndrome. Following derivatization with isopropyl alcohol/HCl and trifluoroacetic anhydride the amino acid enantiomers were separated by gas chromatography on a Chirasil-L-Val column. All subjects excreted D-alanine (10-30% of total Ala). The percentage D-alanine was higher in the patient with the short bowel syndrome. The excretion of D-alanine did not correlate with the D-lactate excretion. An intestinal origin for the D-amino acids is the most probable explanation.

Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Pediatric CD patients (aged 8-17 years) were enrolled prospectively over eight months from an outpatient pediatric gastroenterology center.

Using inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer as disease foci, we review existing racial inequities in surgical outcomes and complications, discuss how social determinants of health and biopsychosocial factors can contribute to these inequities, and highlight potential mechanisms for building interventions to achieve health equity following colorectal surgery for minority populations.

To investigate the regulatory mechanisms and pathways of visfatin under immune stress injury in weaned piglets, we established a lipopolysaccharide-induced immune stress model in weaned piglets to study how visfatin affects peripheral immune organs and intestinal function. The results revealed that visfatin improved the inflammatory response in immune-stressed weaned piglets by reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β, interleukin-6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, as well as decreasing the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio. Visfatin ameliorated oxidative stress in piglets by promoting the expression of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase.

Oligoguluronate lithium (OGLi) was prepared for the purpose of enhancing the anti-ulcerative colitis (UC) activities of OG, in which lithium (Li) is coupled with the C6-carboxyl of G residue. The therapeutic effects of OGLi on dextran sulfate (DSS)-induced UC mice were investigated, and oligoguluronate sodium (OGNa) and lithium carbonate (LC) were used as contrasts. The effects of OGLi, OGNa and LC on the treatment of UC mice were studied by monitoring body weight change and evaluating colon length, the disease activity index (DAI), histopathological examination and gut microbiota regulation.
