Context: COVID-19 has been associated with features of a cytokine storm syndrome with some patients sharing features with the hyperinflammatory disorder, secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH).
Hypothesis: We hypothesized that proteins associated with sHLH from other causes will be associated with COVID-sHLH and that subjects with fatal COVID-sHLH would have defects in immune-related pathways.
Methods And Models: We identified two cohorts of adult patients presenting with COVID-19 at two tertiary care hospitals in Seattle, Washington in 2020 and 2021.

Background And Aim: Creeping fat (CF) in Crohn's disease (CD) is characterized by hyperplastic mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) encasing fibrotic intestinal segments. CF exhibits disruptions in microbiota and lipid metabolism, particularly in lysophospholipids (LPC). This study aims to elucidate the impact of LPC on adipogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells in CF and its effects on immune defense functions in the differentiated adipocytes.

Objective: Caveolae are closely linked to the onset and progression of atherosclerosis. The pivotal involvement of caveolin-1 (CAV1) within the caveolae in atherosclerosis development has been consistently supported. However, the potential contributions of additional caveolae proteins to atherosclerosis necessitate further exploration.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is characterized by elevated concentrations of growth factors that facilitate bone repair. Nonetheless, the effective integration of PRP with bone implants and the sustained release of its active constituents pose significant challenges. In this study, thrombin is grafted onto the surface of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) via an N,N'-Disuccinimidyl Carbonate (DSC) linker and the retained enzymatic activity of thrombin enables the controlled activation of PRP self-assembly, resulting in the formation of a functional bio-gel layer.

Background: Donors on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may require frequent whole blood donation due to erythrocytosis, but FDA guidelines prevent the transfusion of plasma-based products from these donors. This study surveyed TRT donor testosterone levels in whole blood components and evaluated a possible mitigation strategy with a pathogen reduction technology using UVA light and compound adsorption device (CAD) steps.
Study Design And Methods: Whole blood from male TRT donors and controls were processed into red blood cells and plasma components.
