Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review investigates how body composition, particularly skeletal muscle mass, impacts vascular health measures like arterial stiffness and structure.
  • Researchers conducted a thorough literature search and included 15 observational studies with over 21,000 participants, assessing various vascular health indices.
  • The findings show that higher fat-free mass correlates positively with carotid artery thickness, while body fat percentage is linked to arterial stiffness, indicating a need for further research on specific body composition factors and their health implications.

Fish scale gelatin/diatom biosilica composite hemostasis sponge with ultrafast dispersing and in situ gelation for hemorrhage control.

Rapid control of hemorrhage is vital in first-aid and surgery. As representative of emergency hemostatic materials, inorganic porous materials achieve rapid hemostasis through concentrating protein coagulation factors by water adsorption to accelerate the coagulation reaction process, however their efficacy is often limited by the insufficient contact of material with blood and the lack of blood clot strength. Herein, we report an ultrafast dispersing and in situ gelation sponge (SG/DB) based on anchoring interface effect for hemorrhage control using freeze drying method after mixing fish scale gel (SG) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) pre-crystallized diatom biosilica (DB).

1-year patency of a novel biorestorative polymeric coronary artery bypass conduit.

January 2025

Cardiac Surgery Department, Sanatorio Italiano, Asunción, Paraguay.

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) remains the gold standard in the treatment of complex coronary artery disease (CAD). Saphenous vein grafts (SVG) are commonly used for the non-left anterior descending artery (LAD). However, SVG failure rates in CABG surgery have been reported to be as high as 30% at 1 year and ∼50% at 10 years.

Preoperative Vascular and Cranial Nerve Imaging in Skull Base Tumors.

Cancers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Institute of Medicine, University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba 305-8575, Japan.

Skull base tumors such as meningiomas and schwannomas are often pathologically benign. However, surgery for these tumors poses significant challenges because of their proximity to critical structures such as the brainstem, cerebral arteries, veins, and cranial nerves. These structures are compressed or encased by the tumor as they grow, increasing the risk of unintended injury to these structures, which can potentially lead to severe neurological deficits.

Regeneration after ischemia requires to be promoted by (re)perfusion of the affected tissue, and, to date, there is no therapy that covers all needs. In treatment with mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), the secretome acts via paracrine mechanisms and has a positive influence on vascular regeneration via proangiogenic factors. A lack of standardization and the high complexity of vascular structures make it difficult to compare angiogenic readouts from different studies.
