Lipases such as patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 (PNPLA3) exist in multiple tissue types. In subcutaneous adipose tissue, PNPLA3 was not altered during the periparturient period. Conversely, strong associations between liver PNPLA3 and liver triglyceride content peripartum were identified and confirmed to be causative using knockdown approaches in a primary bovine hepatocyte model.

An elevated prepartum BCS is a risk factor for postpartum hyperketonemia (HYK) and elevated nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations in dairy cattle. The association between different adipose tissue depots, such as subcutaneous (SCAT) as well as visceral adipose tissue (VAT) depots, and HYK and elevated NEFA concentrations remains unknown. The objective of this 2-part study was to describe SCAT and VAT depots using ultrasonography during the transition period and to associate them with metabolic markers of negative energy balance in early postpartum dairy cows.

Daily Lipolysis Gene Expression in Male Rat Mesenteric Adipose Tissue: Obesity and Melatonin Effects.

Int J Mol Sci

Departamento de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 28040 Madrid, Spain.

Melatonin is involved in various functions such as the timing of circadian rhythms, energy metabolism, and body mass gain in experimental animals. However, its effects on adipose tissue lipid metabolism are still unclear. This study analyzes the effects of melatonin on the relative gene expression of lipolytic proteins in rat mesenteric adipose tissue and free fatty acid (FFA) and glycerol plasma levels of male Wistar rats fed a high-fat (HFD) or maintenance diet.

This study evaluated the influences of coated folic acid (CFA) and folic acid (FA) on lactation performance, apparent digestibility, rumen volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, blood metabolism, and hepatic lipid content in cows. A total of 140 Holstein cows were allocated to seven groups in a randomized block design. Cows in the control received no addition, those in the in low CFA (LCFA), medium CFA (MCFA), and high CFA (HCFA) groups received CFA at 135, 270, and 405 mg FA/d, and those in the low FA (LFA), medium FA (MFA), and high FA (HFA) groups received FA at 135, 270, and 405 mg/d.

Resveratrol Alleviates NEFA-Induced Oxidative Damage in Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cells by Restoring Mitochondrial Function.

Animals (Basel)

January 2025

Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Sericultural and Animal Biotechnology, School of Biotechnology, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang 212100, China.

In periparturient dairy cows, high non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) caused by a severe negative energy balance induce oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction, which pose a severe challenge to the dairy industry. Resveratrol (RES) is a polyphenolic compound with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and multiple other physiological effects. However, its effect on oxidative damage triggered by NEFAs in bovine mammary epithelial cells is rarely reported.
