Chikungunya, an arboviral disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, has recently increased dramatically in incidence and geographic extent. Large outbreaks have affected islands of the Indian Ocean, India and other parts of South and Southeast Asia, Africa and most recently Italy. International travellers have disseminated new strains of the virus, some into regions from which chikungunya has hitherto been absent. In parallel, over the past 30 years international trade has resulted in the spread of A. albopictus from its original range in Asia, to all continents but Antarctica, thereby extending the geographic area over which transmission can occur.

The rise and resurgence of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) in Europe pose an expanding public health challenge, exacerbated by climate change, globalization, and ecological disruptions. Both arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) transmitted by ticks such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and arboviruses transmitted by mosquitoes like dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and Japanese encephalitis have broadened their distribution due to rising temperatures, changes in rainfall, and increased human mobility. By emphasizing the importance of interconnected human, animal, and environmental health, integrated One Health strategies are crucial in addressing this complex issue.

Background: Brazil is considered an epicenter for emerging and re-emerging arboviruses that significantly impact public health. The mid-sized city of São José do Rio Preto (SJdRP) in northwestern São Paulo state is considered hyperendemic for arboviral diseases, with case numbers climbing each year.
