The years 2007 and 2008 mark the bi-centenary of two brilliant discoveries by Sir Humphry Davy: the isolation of sodium and potassium (1807) and the subsequent first observation (1808) of the beautiful blue and bronze colours now known to be characteristic of the solvated electron(1) in potassium-ammonia systems. In celebration of these dazzling discoveries, we reflect on Davy's many extraordinary contributions to science, technology and poetry. Humphry Davy, a truly great man, of Cornish spirit, brought immeasurable benefits to humankind.

James Watt (1736-1819) is remembered as a steam engine innovator and industrial magnate. A polymath, he was also a hands-on contributor to the Medical Pneumatic Institution of Thomas Beddoes. Watt recruited Humphry Davy, who there discovered analgesic action of inhaled nitrous oxide in 1799.

Background: The observation that patients presenting for bariatric surgery had a high incidence of neuromuscular blocking agent (NMBA) anaphylaxis prompted this restricted case-control study to test the hypothesis that obesity is a risk factor for NMBA anaphylaxis, independent of differences in pholcodine consumption.
Methods: We compared 145 patients diagnosed with intraoperative NMBA anaphylaxis in Western Australia between 2012 and 2020 with 61 patients with cefazolin anaphylaxis with respect to BMI grade, history of pholcodine consumption, sex, age, comorbid disease, and NMBA type and dose. Confounding was assessed by stratification and binomial logistic regression.
This paper publishes, for the first time, Humphry Davy's June 1798 "An Essay on Heat and the Combinations of Light" written in Penzance. It is the manuscript that he sent to Thomas Beddoes which secured for him the position of Superintendent of the Medical Pneumatic Institution in Bristol while aged only nineteen. It is thus a crucial document that increases our understanding about how Davy made that move from Cornwall to Bristol, without which it is highly unlikely that he would have followed the spectacular career trajectory that he did.

The Bristol School of Artists developed between 1800 and 1840 and was a collaboration between professional and amateur artists, one of whom was Dr John King. King started his professional life in Bristol as assistant to Thomas Beddoes where one of his colleagues was Humphry Davy and the three of them worked in the Pneumatic Institute, attempting to cure tuberculosis with gases. King subsequently became a popular general practitioner in Clifton and his correspondence with patrons of art, romantic poets and his friends gives much information about the social life in Bristol in the early part of the 19th century.
