The metabolism, composition, structure and functions of the alveolar surfactant (AS) are described. The most adequate biophysical models for investigation of AS are considered. The principals and possibilities of three mostly used models are described in details: Monolayers, Spinning drop method and Thin liquid films. Some of the studies of Bulgarian biophysical, physicochemical, biochemical and medical groups on the structure and mechanism of action of AS in vivo using samples of amniotic fluid (AF), animal pulmonary lavages (PL) and tracheal aspirates (TA) of newborns and adults are summarized. The role of specific surfactant proteins (SP-A, SP-B, SP-C and SP-D) on the properties and function of AS is demonstrated. The opportunities of the model investigations for application in laboratory pre- and postnatal diagnosis of the respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), as well as for the efficiency of RDS therapy during exogenous surfactant therapy with ALEC (UK), Survanta (USA), Exosurf (USA), Curosurf (Italy) u Alveofact (Germany) are considered.

The World Health Organization has identified multidrug-resistant bacteria as a serious global health threat. Gram-negative bacteria are particularly prone to antibiotic resistance, and their high rate of antibiotic resistance has been suggested to be related to the complex structure of their cell membrane. The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria contains lipopolysaccharides that protect the bacteria against threats such as antibiotics, while the inner membrane houses 20-30% of the bacterial cellular proteins.

Enzyme-enzyme interactions are fundamental to the function of cells. Their atomistic mechanisms remain elusive mainly due to limitations of in-cell measurements. We address this challenge by atomistically modeling, for a total of ≈80 μs, a slice of the human cell cytoplasm that includes three successive enzymes along the glycolytic pathway: glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK), and phosphoglycerate mutase (PGM).

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative neurological disorder defined by the formation of β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles within the brain. Current pharmacological treatments for AD only provide symptomatic relief, and there is a lack of definitive disease-modifying therapies. Chemical chaperones, such as 4-Phenylbutyric acid (4PBA) and Tauroursodeoxycholic acid, have shown neuroprotective effects in animal and cell culture models.

This study investigated the sexual dimorphism in right ventricle (RV) remodeling in right heart failure susceptible Fischer CDF rats using the pulmonary artery banding (PAB) model. Echocardiography and hemodynamic measurements were performed in adult male and female Fischer CDF rats at 1- or 2-weeks post-PAB. RV systolic pressure and RV hypertrophy were significantly elevated in PAB rats compared to sham control at 1- and 2-weeks post-PAB; however, no differences were observed between male and female rats.

Glycolipids are known to stabilize biomembrane multilayers through preferential sugar-sugar interactions that act as weak transient membrane cross-links. Here, we use small-angle and quasi-elastic neutron scattering on oligolamellar phospholipid vesicles containing defined glycolipid fractions in order to elucidate the influence of glycolipids on membrane mechanics and dynamics. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) reveals that the oligolamellar vesicles (OLVs) obtained by extrusion are polydisperse with regard to the number of lamellae, , which renders the interpretation of the quasi-elastic neutron spin echo (NSE) data nontrivial.
