Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of radial optic neurotomy (RON) on retinal function in patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).

Methods: Ten eyes of 10 patients with CRVO underwent pars plana vitrectomy and RON. Standardized combined electroretinograms (ERGs) to full-field bright-flash stimuli were recorded preoperatively and, 3 months postoperatively. The best-corrected visual acuity and foveal thickness were also determined, before and 3 months postoperatively.

Results: The mean best-corrected visual acuity and mean foveal thickness were both significantly improved after vitrectomy and RON. The mean amplitudes of a- and b-waves did not change significantly, but the mean b/a wave ratio was increased significantly after vitrectomy and RON. An improvement of the b/a ratio was observed in six eyes, however, an improvement of retinal circulation was confirmed on postoperative fluorescein angiograms in two of these six eyes.

Conclusions: Significant improvements were observed in the b/a wave ratio of the standard combined ERGs after surgery in eyes with CRVO. The improvement of retinal function was most likely due to improved oxygenation of retina caused by vitrectomy and not by RON.

Introduction: This study investigated the effect of pars plana vitrectomy (VIT) versus pars plana vitrectomy combined with radial optic neurotomy (RON) on recent onset non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

Methods: In this prospective interventional case series, individuals with recent-onset NAION, lower than one month and low vision (lower than 20/200) were recruited. Patients randomly underwent either VIT, or RON.

Management of severe persistent fetal vasculature: case series and review of the literature.

Int Ophthalmol

March 2019

Department of Ophthalmology, Rambam Health Care Campus, Hiafa, Israel.

Purpose: Persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) is a unique ocular disorder usually presenting early in life. The unregressed embryonal hyaloid vasculature poses a risk of severe ocular complications leading to decreased visual acuity. Surgery is the mainstay of therapy in complicated cases.

Surgical manoeuvres for the treatment of retinal vein occlusion peaked at the turn of the century. The first overwhelming reports could not be confirmed in prospective studies. Furthermore, the functional success was never comparable to intravitreal drug therapy, and the manoeuvres are no longer used in clinical routine.

LONG-TERM OUTCOMES OF RADIAL OPTIC NEUROTOMY FOR MANAGEMENT OF OPTIC DISK PIT MACULOPATHY.

Retina

December 2016

*Istanbul Retina Institute, Istanbul, Turkey; †Department of Ophthalmology, Bezmialem Vakif University School of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey; and ‡Department of Biostatistics, Bezmialem Vakif University School of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of radial optic neurotomy (RON) in patients with optic disk pit maculopathy and to compare the functional and anatomical outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with temporal side single RON versus PPV without RON.

Methods: This retrospective study included 15 eyes of 15 consecutive patients who had surgery for optic disk pit maculopathy. Patients were followed for 12 to 115 months after surgery.

[Vitreous body and retinal vein occlusion].

Ophthalmologe

December 2014

Augenklinik des UKGM GmbH, Standort Marburg und der Philipps Universität Marburg, Baldingerstr., 35041, Marburg, Deutschland,

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the adhesion status of the posterior vitreous cortex (PVC) towards the internal limiting membrane (ILM) has an impact on the development of retinal vein occlusion (RVO).

Material And Methods: In a retrospective analysis the operation protocols of 238 eyes receiving pars plana vitrectomy (ppV) and radial optic neurotomy (RON) for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) or ppV in combination with arteriovenous sheathotomy (AVS) for branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) were evaluated with respect to the intraoperative status of posterior vitreous body adhesion. The results were compared with age-matched healthy controls.
