Urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) is a key component of the plasminogen activation system at the cell surface. Recent studies showed that uPAR is expressed in the ischemic damaged brain, suggesting its involvement in brain damage. In this study, we evaluated the role of uPAR in ischemic brain damage induced by permanent middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion in mice with genetic deficiency of uPAR (uPAR(-/-)) or of uPA (uPA(-/-)). Brain damage at 3 days was smaller in uPAR(-/-) mice (4.5+/-1.0mm(3)) than in littermate wild-type mice (uPAR(+/+)) (9.1+/-1.8mm(3), p<0.05), whereas it was comparable in uPA(-/-) (8.0+/-4.1mm(3)) and uPA(+/+) (6.9+/-2.6mm(3)) mice. uPAR expression was upregulated in the ipsilateral cerebral cortex within 12h, and remained elevated for up to 3 days. At 1 or 2 days after MCA occlusion, uPAR expression was selectively localized in vessels at the border of the damaged area. These findings suggest that uPAR expressed by endothelial cells augments the ischemic brain damage via a uPA-independent mechanism.

Hypoxia ischemia (HI) is a leading cause of cerebral palsy and long-term neurological sequelae in infants. Given that mitochondrial dysfunction in neurons contributes to HI brain damage, this study aimed to investigate the regulatory role of miR-9-5p in mitochondrial function following HI injury. Overexpression of miR-9-5p in HI mice or HO-exposed PC12 cells suppressed neuronal injury, associated with increased mitochondrial copy number, normalizing mitochondrial membrane potential, improved nuclear factor-erythroid factor 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) activation, and downregulation of Keap1.

Locomotion is controlled by spinal circuits that interact with supraspinal drives and sensory feedback from the limbs. These sensorimotor interactions are disrupted following spinal cord injury. The thoracic lateral hemisection represents an experimental model of an incomplete spinal cord injury, where connections between the brain and spinal cord are abolished on one side of the cord.

Background: The pathomechanism of blast traumatic brain injury (TBI) and blunt TBI is different. In blast injury, evidence indicates that a single blast exposure can often manifest long-term neurological impairments. However, its pathomechanism is still elusive, and treatments have been symptomatic.

Introduction: Graft optimization is a necessity in order to develop uterus transplantation from brain-dead donors, as a complement to living donors, as these grafts are rare and the last organs retrieved in multiple organ donation. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and interest of hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP) in uterus transplantation using a porcine model; secondary outcomes were the evaluation of the graft's tolerance to a prolonged cold ischaemia time and to find new biomarkers of uterus viability.

Material And Methods: Fifteen uterus allotransplantations were performed in a porcine model, after 18 h of cold ischaemia, divided in three groups: Static cold storage in a HTK solution, HMP (with the VitaSmart (™) machine Bridge to Life Ltd.

Background: Persons with aphasia have difficulties communicating pain symptoms.

Methods: Thirteen observers performed multiple observations using the Pain Assessment in Impaired Cognition (PAIC15) scale for persons with aphasia during rest and transfer in persons with aphasia. This pilot study examined the user-friendliness of PAIC15 and preference for type of self-report pain scales with a questionnaire.
