The theoretical examination of the friction between solids is discussed with a focus on self-assembled monolayers, carbon-containing materials and antiwear additives. Important findings are illustrated by describing examples where simulations have complemented experimental work by providing a deeper understanding of the molecular origins of friction. Most of the work discussed herein makes use of classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Of course, classical MD is not the only theoretical tool available to study friction. In view of that, a brief review of the early models of friction is also given. It should be noted that some topics related to the friction between solids, i.e. theory of electronic friction, are not discussed here but will be discussed in a subsequent review.

This study presents the optimization of the friction stir welding (FSW) process using polynomial regression to predict the maximum tensile load (MTL) of welded joints. The experimental design included varying spindle speeds from 600 to 2200 rpm and welding speeds from 100 to 350 mm/min over 28 experimental points. The resulting MTL values ranged from 1912 to 15,336 N.

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) technology relies on the generation of frictional heat during the rotation of the welding tool in contact with the workpiece as well as the stirring effect of the tool pin to produce solid-state spot joints, especially for lightweight materials. Although FSSW offers significant advantages over traditional fusion welding, the oxidation of the interfacial bond line remains one of the most challenging issues, affecting the quality and strength of the joint under both static and cyclic loading conditions. In this experimental study, inert argon gas was employed to surround the joint, aiming to prevent or minimize the formation of the interfacial oxides.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding process that uses a rotating tool to soften and stir the base metal, thereby joining it. A special type of tool that has attracted the interest of researchers is the so-called bobbin tool (BTFSW), which, unlike conventional tools with one shoulder, features two shoulders that envelop the base metal from both the top and bottom sides. As a result, significant tensile stresses develop on both sides of the weld, caused by the action of both tool shoulders.
