Background: Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and leptin are important cellular factors in the regulation of bone remodeling. We investigated the serum OPG and leptin in Chinese women.

Methods: The serum OPG and leptin in 690 Chinese women aged 20-81 y were measured by an ELISA. The values of OPG and leptin in women of other races were acquired from previous reports on the same.

Results: The geometric mean values (+/- SD) of the serum OPG and leptin in Chinese women were 3.42+/-1.91 pmol/l and 10.5+/-1.99 microg/l, respectively. Further, the serum OPG (4.39+/-1.85 vs 2.74+/-1.81) and leptin (11.4+/-2.21 vs 9.68+/-1.81) in postmenopausal women were significantly higher than in premenopausal women. The serum OPG in middle-aged Chinese women was significantly higher than that in middle-aged Austrian and Icelandic women; however, this is quite contrary to the results obtained in the case of old-aged women. The values of serum leptin in Chinese women were significantly lower than those in white, black, and Mexican American women.

Conclusions: These results provide reliable reference values for OPG and leptin in Chinese adult women. The serum of OPG and leptin differ with ethnicity.

Objective: This systematic review aimed to analyze the literature on changes in endogenous salivary biomarkers of pain, anxiety, stress, and inflammation related to tooth movement during orthodontic treatment of children and adolescents.

Material And Methods: An electronic search was performed in nine databases to identify quasi-experimental studies, without restricting publication language and year. Two reviewers extracted the data and assessed the individual risk of bias using the JBI tools, and the certainty of evidence using the GRADE tool.

Integrated bioinformatic analysis of protein landscape in gingival crevicular fluid unveils sequential bioprocess in orthodontic tooth movement.

Prog Orthod

September 2024

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, National Center for Stomatology, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Department of Orthodontics, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610041, China.

Background: The biological mechanisms driving orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) remain incompletely understood. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is an important indicator of the periodontal bioprocess, providing valuable cues for probing the molecular mechanisms of OTM.

Methods: A rigorous review of the clinical studies over the past decade was conducted after registering the protocol with PROSPERO and adhering to inclusion criteria comprising human subjects, specified force magnitudes and force application modes.

Role of oxytocin in bone.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

September 2024

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Institute of Digital Medicine, Nanjing First Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Oxytocin (OT) is a hormone involved not only in childbirth and lactation but also plays a significant role in bone metabolism by impacting various bone cell types like BMSCs, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts through its receptors.
  • - OT promotes the differentiation of BMSCs into osteoblasts over adipocytes and enhances chondrocyte differentiation, while also regulating factors that inhibit fat cell generation and stimulate bone formation.
  • - The interaction of OT with other hormones like estrogen creates a feedback loop that further enhances its effects on bone metabolism, suggesting potential clinical applications and areas for future research.

Osteoporosis and Leptin: A Systematic Review.

Iran J Public Health

January 2024

Department of Physiology, School of Medicine, Abadan University of Medical Sciences, Abadan, Iran.

Background: Leptin has a great effect on bone through direct or indirect involvement in bone remodeling. Considering the ambiguities that exist regarding the effect of leptin on bone and bone-related diseases including osteoporosis, in this study, we aimed to conduct a systematic review of various studies on the effect of leptin on osteoporosis, which may find an answer to the existing ambiguities.

Methods: The search was performed to review studies on the effects of leptin on osteoporosis by using several databases including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.

: In pregnant women, COVID-19 can alter the metabolic environment, cell metabolism, and oxygen supply of trophoblastic cells and, therefore, have a negative influence on essential mechanisms of fetal development. The purpose of this study was to investigate, for the first time, the effects of COVID-19 infection during pregnancy with regard to the bone turnover and endocrine function of several metabolic biomarkers in colostrum and placenta. : One hundred and twenty-four pregnant mothers were recruited from three hospitals between June 2020 and August 2021 and assigned to two groups: Control group and COVID-19 group.
