We have prepared gold nanoparticles covered with N-isobutyryl-l-cysteine and N-isobutyryl-d-cysteine, respectively. These particles with a mean particle size smaller than 2 nm are highly soluble in water and are amenable to chiroptical techniques such as vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Density functional theory shows that the VCD spectra are sensitive toward the conformation of the adsorbed thiol.

Milk fat content measurement by a simple UV spectrophotometric method: an alternative screening method.

We developed a simple microtechnique to measure lipids in milk by UV spectrophotometry. This technique is based upon the property of fatty acids to absorb UV light proportional to their concentration. Samples of powdered or fluid milk (30 or 60 muL) were added to 3 mL of analytic grade ethanol and stored at -20 degrees C for at least 1 h.

This paper represents a brief review of traditional procedures for the analysis of confiscated drugs and the application of these procedures to the products formed after reductive fragmentation and halogen-acetylated derivatization of the drugs. Confiscated pills, already tentatively identified by some previous procedure, were analyzed by the use of infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and gas chromatography. The same drugs were confirmed by analyzing the alcohols obtained after reductive fragmentation with LiA1H4 as well as the acetylated derivative fractions.
