Kaolin pneumoconiosis may produce radiologic findings similar to those of malignancy. Current management includes serial radiologic examination and lung sampling of suspicious parenchymal opacities and nodules to exclude associated malignancy. This may result in unnecessary pulmonary resections in patients with already compromised lung function. In a patient with known kaolin pneumoconiosis and multiple nodules, we used positron emission tomography to identify suspicious areas for malignancy that were confirmed by open lung biopsy, leading to successful lung cancer treatment.

Workers involved in crushing, milling, screening, and bagging of mica scrap are at increased risk to develop pneumoconiosis, a progressive material overloading of the lung that can lead to fibrosis and, in the later stages, to dyspnea. Pneumoconiosis is only seen after 10-20 years of respiratory mica exposure, and it can have a latency period of up to 40 years-today's cases date back to exposures during the second half of the 20 century. An occupational lifetime exposure level of 3 mg/m respirable mica dust has been considered to present no risk of pneumoconiosis since 1951 when the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) established a 20 million particles per cubic foot (mppcf) (3.

Toxicological evaluation of clay minerals and derived nanocomposites: a review.

Environ Res

April 2015

Area of Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sevilla, Profesor García González 2, 41012 Sevilla, Spain. Electronic address:

Clays and clay minerals are widely used in many facets of our society. This review addresses the main clays of each phyllosilicate groups, namely, kaolinite, montmorillonite (Mt) and sepiolite, placing special emphasis on Mt and kaolinite, which are the clays that are more frequently used in food packaging, one of the applications that are currently exhibiting higher development. The improvements in the composite materials obtained from clays and polymeric matrices are remarkable and well known, but the potential toxicological effects of unmodified or modified clay minerals and derived nanocomposites are currently being investigated with increased interest.

Anthracofibrosis attributed to mixed mineral dust exposure: report of three cases.

Thorax

July 2008

Université Paris 13, EA2363, Hôpital Universitaire Avicenne, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Bobigny, France.

Anthracofibrosis, defined as bronchial luminal narrowing with black pigmentation of the overlying mucosa, has been attributed to tuberculosis. Three patients with anthracofibrosis without mycobacterial infection are described who had previous occupational exposure to mixed dusts. CT scans showed calcified hilar lymph nodes in two patients.
