Analytical results, based on the virial theorem and the Furutsu-Novikov theorem, of the spatiotemporal evolution of a pulse in a nonlinear waveguide with a randomly fluctuating refractive index are presented. For initial conditions in which total collapse occurs in a homogeneous waveguide, random fluctuations postpone the collapse. Sufficiently large-amplitude and short-wavelength fluctuations can cause an initially localized pulse to spread instead of contracting. We show that the disorder can be applied to induce a high degree of controllability of the spatiotemporal extent of the pulses in the nonlinear waveguide.

We introduce a novel material for integrated photonics and investigate aluminum gallium nitride (AlGaN) on aluminum nitride (AlN) templates as a platform for developing reconfigurable and on-chip nonlinear optical devices. AlGaN combines compatibility with standard photonic fabrication technologies and high electro-optic modulation capabilities with low loss over a broad spectral range, from UVC to long-wave infrared, making it a viable material for complex photonic applications. In this work, we design and grow AlGaN/AlN heterostructures and integrate several photonic components.

We integrate monolayer TMDCs into silicon-on-insulation (SOI) waveguides and dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton (DLSPP) waveguides to enhance nonlinear parameters (γ) of silicon-based waveguides. By optimizing the waveguide geometry, we have achieved significantly improved γ. In MoSe-on-SOI and MoSe-in-DLSPP waveguide with optimized geometry, the maximum γ at the excitonic resonant peak (λ) is 5001.

This item from the News and Views (N&V) category aims to provide a summary of theoretical and experimental results recently published in ref. , which demonstrates the creation of corner modes in nonlinear optical waveguides of the higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) type. Actually, these are second-order HOTIs, in which the transverse dimension of the topologically protected edge modes is smaller than the bulk dimension (it is 2, in the case of optical waveguide) by 2, implying zero dimension of the protected modes, which are actually realized as corner or defect ones.

Harnessing high-dimensional entangled states of light presents a frontier for advancing quantum information technologies, from fundamental tests of quantum mechanics to enhanced computation and communication protocols. In this context, the spatial degree of freedom stands out as particularly suited for on-chip integration. But while traditional demonstrations produce and manipulate path-entangled states sequentially with discrete optical elements, continuously coupled nonlinear waveguide systems offer a promising alternative where photons can be generated and interfere along the entire propagation length, unveiling novel capabilities within a reduced footprint.

Moderate efficiencies of nonlinear optical processes can be one of the challenges limiting even more widespread applications. Here we demonstrate a broadband and giant enhancement of nonlinear processes in ZnO through ultrafast permittivity engineering. A remarkable enhancement of the second and third harmonic generation of up to 2 orders of magnitude can be observed over a broadband range of driving wavelengths.
