Article Synopsis
  • Autoimmune blistering diseases (AIBDs), such as bullous pemphigoid (BP) and pemphigus vulgaris (PV), cause severe skin and mucosal blistering but are under-researched in Japan due to their rarity and limited medical coverage for less severe cases.
  • The study analyzed data from a nationwide database, identifying significant case numbers for different AIBDs, with findings showing that BP patients are generally older and have higher comorbidities compared to other AIBDs.
  • In-hospital mortality rates were notably higher for BP and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) than for PV and pemphigus foliaceous (PF), with age being a critical risk factor for mortality across

The systemic treatments for drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) beyond corticosteroids.

World Allergy Organ J

August 2024

Department of Dermatology, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, National Clinical Research Center for Dermatologic and Immunologic Diseases, Beijing, 100730, China.

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), also known as drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DiHS), is a severe type of cutaneous adverse reaction. The gold standard therapy for DRESS involves the discontinuation of the culprit drug, supportive therapies, and administration of corticosteroids. However, in cases of primary treatment failure or suboptimal response, there arises an urgent need for alternative interventions.

Pemphigoid diseases in patients with end-stage kidney diseases: pathogenesis and treatment.

Front Immunol

July 2024

Department of Dermatology, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Dermatologic and Immunologic Diseases, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Pemphigoid diseases are autoimmune disorders causing blistering, and their connection with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) needs more research for effective management.
  • - A systematic review found 53 case reports and 8 studies discussing triggers for pemphigoid in ESKD patients, like treatment materials and immune issues, and listed various treatment options.
  • - The best management strategy is to eliminate triggers, although corticosteroids are commonly used despite their limited effectiveness, while other treatments like MMF and rituximab show potential benefits that require more research.
