Ozone (O3) is an oxidizing agent that acts on phospholipids, proteins and sugars of cellular membranes producing free radicals, which cause oxidative damages. The O3 exposure has been used as a model to study oxidative stress, in which the respiratory airways represent the entrance to the organism. In this study, ultrastructural alterations were identified at the bronchiolar level during the intra-uterine lung development, using an O3 exposure model in pregnant rats during 18, 20 and 21 days of gestation. Twelve pregnant Wistar rats, six controls and six exposed to 1 ppm O3 inhalation during 12 h per day, were used. The rats were sacrificed at gestational days 18, 20 and 21; the fetuses were obtained and their lungs dissected. The ultrastructural analysis evidenced swollen mitochondria, cytoplasmic vacuolization of the epithelial cells and structural disorder caused by the oxidative stress. At gestation day 20, flake-off epithelial cells and laminar bodies in the bronchiolar lumen were observed. In the 21-gestation-day group, the mitochondria were edematous and their cristae were disrupted by the damage caused in mitochondrial membranes.

Purpose: To investigate potential modes of programmed cell death in the lens epithelial cells (LECs) of patients with early age-related cortical cataract (ARCC) and to explore early-stage intervention strategies.

Methods: Anterior lens capsules were collected from early ARCC patients for comprehensive analysis. Ultrastructural examination of LECs was performed using transmission electron microscopy.

The nutritional status of fish is essential for its health, experimental studies, and aquaculture practices. The current study investigated the impact of food deprivation on biochemical parameters, histology of skin, gill, and kidney tissues, and ultrastructure of gills in Clarias batrachus. Fish were subjected to food deprivation for 2, 7, and 15 days resulting in (a) significant increase in plasma cortisol levels, (b) no significant changes in plasma osmolality and plasma glucose content, and (c) significant decrease in liver and muscle glycogen contents.

This research investigates the interactive effects of elevated ozone (eO) and carbon dioxide (eCO) on stomatal morphology and leaf anatomical characteristics in two wheat cultivars with varying O sensitivities. Elevated O increased stomatal density and conductance, causing oxidative stress and cellular damage, particularly in the O-sensitive cultivar PBW-550 (PW), compared to HUW-55 (HW). Conversely, eCO reduced stomatal density and pore size, mitigating O-induced damage by limiting O influx.

Age-related changes to the orbicularis oculi muscle include impaired eyelid function, such as lagophthalmos, alterations in tear film dynamics, and aesthetic changes like wrinkles, festoons, and the descent of soft tissue. To date, the structural and functional changes that would comprehensively increase our understanding of orbicularis aging have not been analyzed. This study aims to investigate functional outcomes using surface electromyography and correlate them with ultrastructural changes in orbicularis during aging.

Purpose: To elucidate the mechanical properties of the bovine lens cortical membrane (CM), the nuclear membrane (NM) containing cholesterol bilayer domains (CBDs), and whole bovine lenses.

Methods: The total lipids (lipids plus cholesterol) from the cortex and nucleus of a single bovine lens were isolated using the monophasic methanol extraction method. Supported CMs and NMs were prepared from total lipids extracted from the cortex and nucleus, respectively, using a rapid solvent exchange method and probe-tip sonication, followed by the fusion of unilamellar vesicles on a flat, freshly cleaved mica surface.
