Connexins (Cxs) are fundamental in cell-cell communication, functioning as gap junction channels (GJCs) that facilitate solute exchange between adjacent cells and as hemichannels (HCs) that mediate solute exchange between the cytoplasm and the extracellular environment. Mutations in the GJB1 gene, which encodes Cx32, lead to X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1 (CMTX1), a rare hereditary demyelinating disorder of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) without an effective cure or treatment. In Schwann cells, Cx32 HCs are thought to play a role in myelination by enhancing intracellular and intercellular Ca signaling, which is crucial for proper PNS myelination.

Article Synopsis
  • Phenols are common industrial pollutants found in sectors like pharmaceuticals and agriculture, often released untreated, necessitating effective detection methods.
  • Current detection techniques like spectrophotometry and chromatography are costly and complex, highlighting the need for a simpler, affordable solution.
  • This study presents a new method using low-cost colorimetric paper-based sensor strips to detect phenols in water using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, achieving high recovery rates with promising detection limits.

Survivin belongs to a family of proteins that promote cellular proliferation and inhibit cellular apoptosis. Its overexpression in various cancer types has led to its recognition as an important marker for cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this work, we compare two approaches for the immunochemical detection of survivin through surface-enhanced fluorescence or Raman spectroscopy using surfaces with nanowires decorated with silver nanoparticles in the form of dendrites or aggregates as immunoassays substrates.

Simple analytical devices suitable for the analysis of various biochemical and immunechemical markers are highly desirable and can provide laboratory diagnoses outside standard hospitals. This study focuses on constructing an easily reproducible do-it-yourself ELISA plate reader biosensor device, assembled from generally available and inexpensive parts. The colorimetric biosensor was based on standard 96-well microplates, 3D-printed parts, and a smartphone camera as a detector was utilized here as a tool to replace the ELISA method, and its function was illustrated in the assay of TNFα as a model immunochemical marker.
