Background: Leptin levels have been reported to be higher in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) than in control subjects with matching age and body mass index (BMI). Although animal studies have shown that leptin augments hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR), the effect of leptin on HCVR has not been clarified in OSA.

Objectives: To investigate whether leptin could augment HCVR during wakefulness in patients with OSA.

Methods: Of 134 consecutive patients with OSA, 13 eucapnic and 16 hypercapnic patients with OSA, and 12 control subjects matched for sex, age, and BMI were selected. Fasting serum leptin levels were collected, and HCVR during wakefulness assessed by the slope between minute ventilation and end-tidal PCO(2).

Results: There was a significant positive relationship between serum leptin levels and HCVR in the group including control subjects and eucapnic patients with OSA (r = 0.42, p < 0.05). Subgroup analyses suggest that serum leptin levels and HCVR were significantly higher in eucapnic patients with OSA than in control subjects. On the other hand, hypercapnic patients had lower HCVR than eucapnic patients (p < 0.05), whereas serum leptin levels were similar between the two OSA subgroups.

Conclusion: Leptin levels and HCVR are correlated as long as the eucapnic condition is maintained. We speculate that a stimulating effect of leptin on HCVR may be masked by the hypoventilation state.

Little is known about how blood free amino acids (FAAs) change in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This study aims to identify the imbalance of FAAs in MASLD and explore its correction as a potential therapeutic target. We analyzed plasma FAAs data from 23,036 individuals with steatosis information from a biobank in Japan, and 310 patients with MASLD were enrolled.

High leptin levels in blood are associated with chronic widespread pain in rheumatoid arthritis.

Department of Clinical Sciences Lund, Section of Rheumatology, Lund University, Faculty of Medicine, Lund, Sweden.

Background: High body mass index (BMI) has been shown to have an association with chronic widespread pain (CWP), both in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and in other pain conditions such as fibromyalgia. Research on the adipose tissue and it's adipokines, for example the well described leptin, is emerging. The objective of this study was to determine if there is an association between leptin levels in blood and CWP in patients with RA.

Background: Inflammation can result in the development of breast cancer in women with overweight and obese, and also affects the outcome and prognosis of breast cancer patients, thereby decreasing the cure and survival rates of breast cancer patients. Exercise may benefit breast cancer patients as a supplement to conventional treatments. However, research on the effects of exercise on inflammatory markers in women with breast cancer who are overweight and obese remains incomplete.

The prevalence of noncommunicable inflammatory disease is increasing in modern urban societies, posing significant challenges to public health. Novel prevention and therapeutic strategies are needed to effectively deal with this issue. One promising approach is leveraging microorganisms such as Mycobacterium vaccae ATCC 15483, known for its anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory, and stress-resilience properties.

Background: Besides ovarian dysfunction and infertility, individuals with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) also present a number of systemic disturbances including functional derangements in the adipose tissue which possibly aggravates the endocrinometabolic abnormality in PCOS. Epigenetic changes have been implicated in metabolic-related disorders including PCOS. However, its pathogenic involvement in adipose-ovarian dysfunction is unclear.
