We report on optical parametric oscillators (OPO's) based on periodically poled RbTiOAsO(4) (PP RTA), which are pumped by Q -switched solid-state lasers. With a diode-pumped Nd:YVO(4) laser (pulse energy, 800microJ ; pulse duration, 5.5 ns; repetition rate, 1 kHz) the PP RTA OPO generated 1.58-microm signal and 3.26-microm idler radiation with a signal pulse energy of 45microJ . The large aperture of 3 mmx3 mm of the PP RTA crystal also permitted OPO operation with pump pulse energies as high as 65 mJ, provided by a flash-lamp-pumped Q -switched Nd:YAG laser (pulse duration, 20 ns; repetition rate, 10 Hz). With this pump source the OPO generated signal pulse energies as high as 17 mJ, corresponding to an efficiency of 26%. The performance of this OPO shows that large-aperture PP RTA crystals are well suited for pulsed nanosecond OPO operation with pump pulse energies of tens of millijoules.

Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a catheter-based procedure that utilizes short high voltage and short-duration electrical field pulses to induce tissue injury. The last decade has yielded significant scientific progress and quickened interest in PFA as an energy modality leading to the emergence of the clinical use of PFA technologies for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. It is generally agreed that more research is needed to improve our biophysical understanding of PFA for clinical cardiac applications as well as its potential as a potential alternative energy source to thermal ablation modalities for the treatment of other arrhythmias.

Meteoritic impacts on planetary surfaces deliver a significant amount of energy that can produce prebiotic organic compounds such as cyanides, which may be a key step to the formation of biomolecules. To study the chemical processes of impact-induced organic synthesis, we simulated the physicochemical processes of hypervelocity impacts (HVI) in experiments with both high-speed C projectiles and laser ablation. In the first approach, a C beam was accelerated to collide with ammonium nitrate (NHNO) to reproduce the shock process and plume generation of meteoritic impacts on nitrogen-rich planetary surfaces.

We demonstrate a high-performance ultrafast broadband time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) system based on the transient grating photoluminescence spectroscopy (TGPLS) technique. The core of the system is a Kerr effect-induced transient grating (TG) optical gate driven by high repetition rate ultrashort laser pulses at 1030 nm with micro-Joule pulse energy. Satisfying the demands of spectroscopy applications, the setup achieves high sensitivity, rapid data acquisition, ultrafast time resolution, and a wide spectral window from ultraviolet to near-infrared.

We demonstrate low energy, forming and compliance-free operation of a resistive memory obtained by the partial oxidation of a two-dimensional layered van-der-Waals semiconductor: hafnium disulfide (HfS). Semiconductor-oxide heterostructures are achieved by low temperature (<300 °C) thermal oxidation of HfS under dry conditions, carefully controlling process parameters. The resulting HfOS/HfS heterostructures are integrated between metal contacts, forming vertical crossbar devices.

Background: Pelvic trauma can have long-lasting debilitating effects, including severe erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. While there are effective treatments for ED, these treat the symptoms not the cause. Those who suffer from an acute traumatic injury to the neurovascular supply of penis, may benefit from regenerative therapy.
