The extraction and separation of lanthanides have been investigated using CHON-type extractants, which are composed of only C, H, O, and N atoms. N,N-Dioctyldiglycol amic acid (DODGAA) showed high extraction and separation performances for heavier lanthanides compared with typical CHON-type extractants. On the other hand, N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) provided an unprecedentedly high selectivity for lighter lanthanides. Furthermore, it was found that the combination of DODGAA and TPEN under suitable conditions enabled the mutual separation of light, middle, and heavy lanthanides.

The chemical similarities between trivalent actinides [An(III)] and lanthanides [Ln(III)] present a significant challenge in differentiating and separating them, which is a key step toward closing the nuclear fuel cycle. However, the existing separation approaches commonly suffer from demerits such as inadequate separation factors, limited stripping efficiency, and undesired coextraction. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with adjustable structures, diverse chemical functionalities, and excellent CO capture ability have shown important potential application in the photocatalytic reduction of CO to valuable fuel to curb the energy crisis. In this work, a series of new isostructural lanthanide-organic frameworks based on hexanuclear {LnO} clusters, {(DMA) [Ln(μ-OH)(HO)(SBTC)]} (Ln-MOFs, Ln = Eu, Dy, Gd, Tb, Yb; HSBTC = 5,5'-(ethene-1,2-diyl) di-isophthalic acid; DMA = dimethylamine cation) were synthesized by the solvothermal method. Ln-MOFs were metal-organic frameworks formed by {Ln(μ-OH)} clusters and poly(carboxylic acid) ligands HSBTC, which exhibited excellent photocatalytic properties for the reduction of CO to CO.

Relativistic pseudopotentials (PPs) and basis sets are the workhorses for modeling heavy elements of lanthanides and actinides. The norm-conserving Goedecker-Teter-Hutter (GTH) PP is advantageous for modeling lanthanide and actinide compounds and condensed systems because of its transferability and accuracy. In this work, we develop a set of well-benchmarked GTH-type 5f-in-core PPs with scalar-relativistic effects together with associated Gaussian basis sets for the most commonly encountered trivalent and tetravalent actinides [An(III), An(IV); An = Pa-Lr].

Molten salt electrolysis has been widely used in the production and separation of metals, but it still lacks in situ real-time analysis methods to monitor the electrolysis process. In this work, a microplasma spectroscopic real-time analysis (MIPECA) system is developed based on noncontact direct current (DC) glow discharge. With the MIPECA system, the atomic emission spectroscopy of Li and K could be obtained in situ in LiCl-KCl molten salt, and the impact of different operating conditions on spectral signals was investigated.
