The frequency of the dark resonance in coherent population trapping experiments has been measured as a function of the degree of ellipticity and the intensity of the probe light. The results have been used to find the quantum limit of sensitivity of an optical magnetometer based on the nonlinear Faraday effect.

We study experimentally the nonlinear mode coupling between circular polarizations in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) device developed for spin injection. The specific experimental arrangement that includes a Faraday rotator enables laser oscillation on left-circular or right-circular polarization, by adjusting the cavity losses. We show the simultaneous oscillation of both polarizations never occurs, proving that the Lamb coupling constant is very close to 1 in this VCSEL device, a situation that is ideal for spintronic applications.

We have developed a terahertz (THz) nonlinear spectrometer at low temperatures (1.5-300 K) and under high magnetic fields (up to 10 T) by combining the laser-driven table-top intense THz source with a superconducting magnet. The strong-field THz pump pulse was generated from LiNbO3 crystal using the tilted-pulse-front technique and tightly focused into the center of the magnet by an off-axis parabolic mirror and a THz lens.

Parametric oscillators are examples of externally driven systems that can exhibit two stable states with opposite phase depending on the initial conditions. In this work, we propose to study what happens when the external forcing is perturbed by a continuously parametrized defect. Initially in one of its stable states, the oscillator will be perturbed by the defect and finally reach another stable state, which can be its initial one or the other one.

Optical nonreciprocity is manifested as a difference in the transmission of light for the opposite directions of excitation. Nonreciprocal optics is traditionally realized with relatively bulky components such as optical isolators based on the Faraday rotation, hindering the miniaturization and integration of optical systems. Here we demonstrate free-space nonreciprocal transmission through a metasurface comprised of a two-dimensional array of nanoresonators made of silicon hybridized with vanadium dioxide (VO).
