Unlabelled: THE AIM of this work was to study the clinical and therapeutic features of this affection.

Case Report: Our retrospective study concerned two cases of hyperlipemic pancreatitis treated during 6 years from 1998 to 2003. The incidence of this affection was 1.42%. Our patients were respectively a man aged 32 years without any significant history and a pregnant woman aged 24 years with a positive history of dyslipidemia. Clinical, biologic and radiological data didn't differ from those of other causes of acute pancreatitis. The hyperlipemic origin was confirmed by a lactescent serum and a rate of triglycerides greater than 10 g/l. The course was characterized by the recurrence of pancreatitis related to the increased triglycerid serum level over 10 g/l. Plasmapheresis and administration of heparin and/or insulin seem to be efficient in reducing the serum level of triglyceride and in improving the course. Hygieno-dietary measures and hypolipemiant treatment were necessary for the level of triglyceirdes in serum below 10 g/l. We in the absence of comolicatons, surgery seemed umnecessry in the two cases.

Conclusion: the clinical pattern of acute hyperlipemic pancreatitis doesn't include any specific elements, but its treatment and prevention must take into account the associated hyperlipidemia.

Article Synopsis
  • Alitretinoin, a retinoid for severe hand eczema, has a similar side effect profile to isotretinoin but shows a higher incidence of serious psychiatric disorders.
  • In a study analyzing adverse drug reactions (ADRs) from 2012 to 2016, 52 serious and 88 non-serious unexpected ADRs were reported, including new cases like myocardial infarction and pancreatitis.
  • Due to these findings, particularly the significant rate of psychiatric issues and pregnancy exposures, the French National Agency for Medicines has restricted initial prescriptions of alitretinoin.

Lipid-lowering effect of bergamot polyphenolic fraction: role of pancreatic cholesterol ester hydrolase.

J Biol Regul Homeost Agents

Institute of Research for Food Safety and Health (IRC-FSH), Department of Health Science, Magna Græcia University of Catanzaro, Catanzaro, Italy.

Bergamot polyphenolic fraction (BPF) has been shown to positively modulate several mechanisms involved in metabolic syndrome, suggesting its use in therapy. In particular, it is able to induce a significant amelioration of serum lipid profile in hyperlipemic patients at different levels. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effect of BPF on cholesterol absorption physiologically mediated by pancreatic cholesterol ester hydrolase (pCEH).

Pancreatitis in hyperlipemic mink (Mustela vison).

Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, Department of Basic Sciences and Aquatic Medicine, PO Box 8146 Dep., 0033 Oslo, Norway.

In both man and animals, inflammatory changes in the pancreas often occur with disturbances in lipid metabolism, including hypertriglyceridemia and an excess of free fatty acids. Hyperlipoproteinemia type I is a human condition caused by a deficiency of lipoprotein lipase. A similar metabolic disturbance that occurs in mink is of considerable comparative interest, as it is also followed by pancreatitis.

Severe hypertriglyceridemia (SH) represents a therapeutic emergency because of the possibility of developing cardiovascular events and hyperlipemic acute pancreatitis (PA). Most patients with SH suffer primary or genetic abnormality in lipid metabolism in combination with a precipitating factor such as uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, and drug intake. The standard treatment of hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) with omega 3 fatty acids and fibrates, along with dietary changes, has no effect on an emergency situation.

Severe acute pancreatitis in the elderly: etiology and clinical characteristics.

World J Gastroenterol

April 2008

Department of General Surgery, Xuanwu Hospital, 45 Changchun Jie, Beijing 100053, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the causes and clinical features of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) specifically in elderly patients (60 years and older) treated at Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing from 2000 to 2007.
  • Out of 169 SAP cases, 94 were elderly; their primary causes were biliary and idiopathic, contrasting with younger patients, where biliary, hyperlipidemic, and alcoholic causes were more common.
  • Elderly patients displayed significantly higher rates of co-morbid conditions and more severe organ failures, with mortality linked to the severity of SAP and occurrence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), emphasizing the need for careful monitoring of organ function.
