A degenerate parametric amplifier at the transmitter can improve the power efficiency of a small-signal phase-modulated optical transmission system by acting as a phase amplifier. For a parametric power gain H, the total transmitter power requirement is reduced by a factor of H(2) compared with that of a conventional phase-modulated system.
