Evidence for positive Darwinian selection on the hepcidin gene of Perciform and Pleuronectiform fishes.

Hepcidin is a small cysteine-rich peptide that plays an important role in antimicrobial activity and in maintaining iron homeostasis in vertebrates. Here we report on the underlying mechanism that maintains high sequence diversities among the hepcidin-like variants of perciform and pleuronectiform fishes. In contrast to mammals, maximum likelihood-based codon substitution analyses revealed that positive Darwinian selection (nonsynonymous to synonymous substitution, omega > 1) is the likely cause of accelerated rate of amino acid substitutions in the hepcidin mature peptide region of these fishes. Comparison of models incorporating positive selection (omega > 1) at certain sites with models not incorporating positive selection (omega < 1) failed to reject (p = 0) the evidence of positive selection among the codon sites of percifom and pleuronectiform hepcidin. The adaptive evolution of this peptide in perciform and pleuronectiform fishes might be directed by pathogens when the host is exposed to new habitats/environments.

Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are a class of protein kinases that regulate various physiological processes, and play a crucial role in maintaining the osmotic equilibrium of fish. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize the mapk family genes in cobia (Rachycentron canadum) and examine their expression profiles under different low salinity stress regimes (acute: from 30‰ to 10‰ in 1 h, sub-chronic: from 30‰ to 10‰ over 4 d). Background: Salinomycin, an antibiotic, have potential as a veterinary drug for fish due to its anti-parasitic activity against several fish parasites. Thus the residual levels of salinomycin in muscles of two significant aquaculture species in Korea, olive flounder and black rockfish, were analyzed using HPLC-MS-MS.

Results: The proper method to analyze the residual salinomycin in fish muscles using LC-MS-MS was settled and the method was validated according to CODEX guidelines.

Artificial oyster reefs provide important spawning and nursery grounds for a variety of fishes and large mobile crustaceans. Between July 2016 and May 2017, seasonal surveys of species composition and community structure were performed in the artificial oyster reef area and control area adjacent to the Luanhe River Estuary in China. During the survey year, 56 species belonging to 50 genera, 45 families, and 19 orders were recorded.
