A diffractive Alvarez lens is demonstrated that consists of two separate phase plates, each having complementary 16-level surface-relief profiles that contain cubic phase delays. Translation of these two components in the plane of the phase plates is shown to produce a variable astigmatic focus. Both spherical and cylindrical phase profiles are demonstrated with good accuracy, and the discrete surface-relief features are shown to cause less than lambda/10 wave-front aberration in the transmitted wave front over a 40 mm x 80 mm region.

The imaging of individual Ba ions in high pressure xenon gas is one possible way to attain background-free sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta decay and hence establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. In this paper we demonstrate selective single Ba ion imaging inside a high-pressure xenon gas environment. Ba ions chelated with molecular chemosensors are resolved at the gas-solid interface using a diffraction-limited imaging system with scan area of 1 × 1 cm located inside 10 bar of xenon gas.

We introduce a hardware-software system for rapidly characterizing liquid microjets for x-ray diffraction experiments. An open-source python-based software package allows for programmatic and automated data collection and analysis. We show how jet speed, length, and diameter are influenced by nozzle geometry, gas flow rate, liquid viscosity, and liquid flow rate.

Coating development on mine waste rocks as a protective sink to attenuate the off-site migration of antimony in the environment.

J Hazard Mater

November 2024

Department of Environmental Geochemistry, IRNASA (CSIC), C/ Cordel de Merinas 40-52, Salamanca 37008, Spain. Electronic address:

This study explored the feasibility of depositing protective coatings with an Sb scavenger function on mine waste rocks derived from the exploitation of stibnite deposits. Encapsulation treatments were performed using ferrous sulfate as the coating precursor. Different Fe/Sb molar ratios (0.

Antimicrobial Activity of Anionic Bis(-Heterocyclic Carbene) Silver Complexes.

Molecules

September 2024

Departamento de Química Inorgánica, Facultad de Química, Universidad de Sevilla, 41012 Sevilla, Spain.

The antimicrobial properties of a series of anionic bis(carbene) silver complexes Na[Ag(NHC)] were investigated (- and , where NHC is a 2,2'-(imidazol-2-ylidene)dicarboxylate-type -heterocyclic carbene). The complexes were synthesized by the interaction of imidazolium dicarboxylate compounds with silver oxide in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide. Complexes , were characterized analytically and spectroscopically, and the ligand precursor and complexes and were structurally identified by X-ray diffraction methods.
