A diabetic Caucasian woman presented with discrepantly low HbA Ic values compared with her glycaemia. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis disclosed 80% HbA and 20% HbI Philadelphia (I6alpha2 lys --> glut). The calculated glycosylation gap from the fructosamine level was 1.2%. The haemoglobin alpha/beta glycation ratios, as measured by electron spray ionisation mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), for the patient and her three children also carrying the mutation were decreased by values of 0.56 and 0.51, 0.50 and 0.49, respectively (reference value 0.66).

Background: Dysglycaemia metrics, defined as hyperglycaemia, increased glucose variability, hypoglycaemia and reduced time in the targeted blood glucose range (TIR), are linked to higher mortality. The relationship between dysglycaemia metrics and intensive care unit (ICU) mortality over time for patients with and without diabetes remains inconclusive, posing challenges for ICU medical staff in accurately identifying and distinguishing various risk factors and taking timely and appropriate responses.
Aim: To explore which dysglycaemia metrics within the first 7 days of ICU stay are associated with ICU mortality among patients with and without diabetes.

Hyperglycemia accelerates Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression, yet the role of monosaccharides remains unclear. Here, it is demonstrated that mannose, a hexose, closely correlates with the pathological characteristics of AD, as confirmed by measuring mannose levels in the brains and serum of AD mice, as well as in the serum of AD patients. AD mice are given mannose by intra-cerebroventricular injection (ICV) or in drinking water to investigate the effects of mannose on cognition and AD pathological progression.
