The inactivation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and cytotoxic properties of ozone-treated serum and serum-supplemented media were examined. The titer of HIV suspensions in human serum was reduced in a dose-dependent manner when treated with total reacted ozone concentrations at a range of 0.5 to 3.5 micrograms/ml-1. Complete inactivation of HIV suspensions was achieved by 4.0 micrograms/ml-1 of ozone in the presence or absence of H-9 cells. In contrast, cellular metabolism, as measured by MTT dye cleavage, and DNA replication, as measured by BUdR incorporation, were enhanced in H-9 cells grown in media treated with quantities of ozone that completely inactivate HIV. The permissively HIV-infected cell line HXB/H-9 was cultured in ozone-treated media for six days with culture supernatants being sampled and assayed on alternate days for HIV p24 core protein. HIV p24 was reduced in all treated cultures compared to control cultures, with an average reduction of 46% [p24].

Probiotics have shown efficacy in preventing and reducing infections caused by common viruses, including rotavirus, norovirus, hepatitis, human papillomavirus (HPV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and herpes simplex virus (HSV). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, three-arm parallel-group study was conducted on 56 patients with moderate COVID-19 symptoms. Patients were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: standard treatment combined with UBBC-07, standard treatment combined with Unique IS-2, or standard treatment with a placebo.

Gamma-Retroviral (RVVs) and lentiviral vectors (LVVs) represent indispensable tools in somatic gene therapy, mediating the efficient, stable transfer of therapeutic genes into a variety of human target cells. LVVs, in contrast to RVVs, are capable of stably genetically modifying non-proliferating target cells, making them the superior instrument in cell and gene therapy. To date, the LVV manufacturing process employs human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) and derivatives thereof transiently transfected with multiple plasmids encoding the required viral vector components.

Co-delivering dual-drug systems have proven to be effective in, for example, anticancer therapy or HIV prophylaxis due to a higher target selectivity and therapeutic efficacy from compound synergism. However, various challenges regarding physical stability can arise during the formulation definition when multiple drug compounds are included in the same formulation. In this work, the focus was on aqueous suspensions, which could be applied as long-acting injectable formulations to release the drug compounds over weeks to months after administration.

Background: Nucleic acid extraction (NAE) is essential in molecular diagnostics, genetic engineering, and DNA sequencing. While advances in switching valve-assisted, self-contained microfluidic (SM) cartridges have improved the NAE processes, challenges persist in streamlining workflows, reducing processing times, and enhancing multi-target detection. Achieving these objectives requires precise control of on-chip fluid dynamics and efficient transfer of nucleic acid solutions (NAS) to detection areas.
