Density profiles of a perdeuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) (dPMMA) film spin-coated on a substrate in water, hexane, and methanol, which are "nonsolvents" for dPMMA, were examined along the direction normal to the interface by specular neutron reflectivity (NR). The interfaces of dPMMA with the liquids were diffuse in comparison with the pristine interface with air; the interfacial width with water was thicker than that with hexane. Interestingly, in water, the dPMMA film was composed of a swollen layer and the interior region, which also contained water, in addition to the diffused layer. The interface of dPMMA with hexane was sharper than that with water. Although there were slight indications of a swollen layer for the dPMMA in hexane, the solvent molecules did not penetrate significantly into the film. On the other hand, in methanol, the whole region of the dPMMA film was strikingly swollen. To conserve mass, the swelling of the film by the nonsolvents is accompanied by an increase in the film thickness. The change in the film thickness estimated by NR was in excellent accord with the results of direct observations using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The modulus of dPMMA in the vicinity of the interfaces with liquids was also examined on the basis of force-distance curves measured by AFM. The modulus decreased closer to the outermost region of the film. The extent to which the modulus decreased in the interfacial region was consistent with the amount of liquid sorbed into the film.

For polymer-blend films, local dynamics in confined polymer domains tend to differ from the bulk because of significant contributions from the polymer-polymer interface. Herein, we investigated the diffusion dynamics of entangled polymer thin films confined between different polymers in a direction perpendicular to the surface using neutron reflectivity. We found that a bilayer of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and deuterated PMMA (PMMA) sandwiched between polystyrene (PS) layers exhibited significant increase in mobility near the polymer-polymer interface with decreasing PMMA thickness.

Thin films with a rich variety of different nano-scale morphologies have been produced by spin casting solutions of various concentrations of PS:d-PMMA blends from toluene solutions. During the spin casting process specular reflectivity and off-specular scattering data were recorded and ex situ optical and atomic force microscopy, neutron reflectivity and ellipsometry have all been used to characterise the film morphologies. We show that it is possible to selectively control the film morphology by altering the solution concentration used.

The surface-sensitive technique of sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy has been applied to study the buried interfaces between different polymers including deuterated polystyrene (d-PS) and deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) (d-PMMA) and a two-component silane adhesion-promoting mixture (SAPM) composed of (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (gamma-GPS) and a methylvinylsiloxanol (MVS). Because of the dissolution of d-PS, no SFG CH stretching signals could be collected from the d-PS/gamma-GPS interface, and SFG signals collected from the d-PS/SAPM interface gradually disappeared over time. SFG results also showed that gamma-GPS can diffuse through the d-PMMA film.

The early-stage roughening of the interface between thin deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) (d-PMMA) layers on thick polystyrene (PS) films was studied as a function of the temperature using real-time specular neutron reflectivity. By measuring the growth of the interface roughness as a precursor of the dewetting, the characteristic time constant of the early stages of the process was studied as a function of the temperature approaching the glass transition temperature (T(g)) of the two polymers from above and compared with the prediction of the growth of the interface by the spinodal process. Both solid and liquid regimes were probed, in which the viscosity of the thin film or the substrate dominates respectively.
