A quick tour of nematode diversity and the backbone of nematode phylogeny.

Contrary to textbook dogma, nematodes are not only highly diverse, but often also complex and biologically specialized metazoans. Just a few of the many fascinating adaptations are reviewed in this chapter, as a prelude to a quick tour through phylogenetic relationships within the phylum. Small Subunit rDNA sequences have confirmed several controversial prior hypotheses, as well as revealing some unexpected relationships, resulting in a recent proposal for revised classification. Three major lineages exist within the phylum: Chromadoria, Enoplia and Dorylaimia. The exact order of appearance of these lineages is not yet resolved, which also leaves room for uncertainty about the biology and morphology of the exclusive common ancestor of nematodes. Enoplia and Dorylaimia differ considerably in many respects from C. elegans, which is a member of Chromadoria. The latter group is extremely diverse in its own right, for example in ecological range, in properties of the cuticle and in structure of the pharynx. The formerly relatively widely accepted class Secernentea is deeply nested within Chromadoria, and has therefore recently been relegated to the rank and name of order Rhabditida. Within this order, closer relatives of C. elegans include strongylids, diplogasterids and bunonematids. Tylenchs, cephalobs and panagrolaimids are also members of Rhabditida, albeit probably more distantly related to C. elegans.

Objective: To explore patients' experience of decision making regarding treatment of localised kidney cancer.

Methods: A total of 21 patients with localised kidney cancer, across three countries, participated in either four focus groups or seven semi-structured interviews that lasted on average 2 h. Focus groups and interviews were all conducted in the participants' native language, recorded, transcribed and (if applicable) translated into English.

Can a single question replace patient-reported outcomes in the follow-up of elbow arthroplasty? A validation study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using a single evaluation method, the subjective elbow value (SEV), to gather patient-reported outcomes after elbow arthroplasty rather than relying on traditional, lengthy questionnaires.
  • Among 82 patients evaluated, the SEV was found to correlate moderately with two common outcome measures: the Oxford Elbow Score (OES) and the Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (QuickDASH).
  • The findings suggest that using SEV could simplify the follow-up process for elbow arthroplasty, potentially saving time and reducing the burden on patients.

This paper proposes a novel tour guide robot, "ASAHI ReBorn", which can lead a guest by hand one-on-one while maintaining a proper distance from the guest. The robot uses a stretchable arm interface to hold the guest's hand and adjusts its speed according to the guest's pace. The robot also follows a given guide path accurately using the Robot Side method, a robot navigation method that follows a pre-defined path quickly and accurately.

The aim of this study is to develop a simple and efficient screening questionnaire to be able to routinely monitor potential radioiodine therapy-induced complications. A new radioiodine 6 (RAI-6) questionnaire containing six questions adressing salivary, ocular, and nasal symptoms as well as quality of life was developed. Validation of the RAI-6 questionnaire was assessed with a group of fifty-four patients diagnosed with differentiated thyroid carcinoma treated post-operatively with radioiodine therapy, and in a group of fifty healthy volunteers.

Introduction: Trans-urethral bladder surgery has gained popularity in the fields of electro-resection and laser lithotripsy, with endoscopic suturing being overlooked. Bladder defect closure using a pure trans-urethral suturing technique can provide a quick and effective solution in situations where conventional management options are not feasible.

Methods: Here we describe this innovative novel technique developed by our group that was used to treat two different cases with bladder perforation at two different institutions.
